Topic Dog Boards / General / Puppy farming on a BIG scale!!!

Whilst reading a post on here from someone looking for yet another designer cross a poo of some sort, I got a mail froma a friend in the USA pointing me ot a site where a breeding kennel is for sale - with facilities for 600 brood bitches!   Thsi is a big scale puppy mill, looks state of the art and immaculate, but  can you imagine it!!!:(  They have been concentrating on a lot of designer "hybirds" as they put it, and have a lovely little write up with the details of what sort of family each is  ideal for, as being expert they can guarantee how the pups will turn out.  Some of the crosses are truly bizarre, a pug male features strongly, one of their most popular "ines" are Puggle ( x Beagle) but even more bizarrelyl, Pug X BAssett - would you belivey that these always have the mums ears?  They also have American Eskimo X Lhasa, for gods sake!  They go inot the usual bit about how "hybrids" dont suffer from the parents health issues.  These peolpe have dozens of such crosses being produced regularly.  I would post the URKL in the hope that puppy buying people could read these spiels and see just how ridiculous it isto make these preposterous claims, but it might just generate interest in soem of the more outlandish crosses which our own unsrupulous breeders have not thought of.

i am now going to have a nice stiff drink and try not to thbink about them.

Hi Lea, this is in the USA, and to be fair, the facilities and conditions look excellent, but however many staff you have, how can these rows and rows of kennels wiht litters be loved and socialsed?  The only reason I can think of doing a Bassett Pug cross is becasue Bassets are long so often carry big litters.  There are lots of pics. with  the Pug boy, boston boy etc, running with "girls" of the various breeds.

PM me the addy I want to see for myself.

Is it my imagination but is it more acceptable or more common to breed on a huge scale like this in USA, or are there reaslly such large scale producers in UK too.

Hi Brainless, will PM add. now.  Yes, in many rural areas of the USA it seems that puppy mills are acceptable business, and of course ther is the gian Hunt Coprporation which breed thousands of pups, as really big business.  Of course, all reputable breeders over there hate them, but  it seems quite normal to the average American to see and buy pups in a pet shop.  I was heart broken the last time I was in Philadelphia to see a new Pet shop in the mall, one side sold teddy bears, the other side of the shop had lots of pet accessories, and then a whole wall wiht little glass viewing windows, with pups for sale.  This place had a big notice up saying that you could book kids parties in the play area, either a teddy bear picnic, or a puppy party, with the kids playing with real, live pups!

I suppose eduvation is the only thing that can lessen the problem, jsut so long as people think it Ok to view purchasing a pup like buying a car or washing machine then this kind of instant sale will appeal.

The addy no longer works Gwen, just takes me straight to an Auction site, so maybe it has ben taken down.

Its not an acceptable practice to the general public of these puppy mills in the States, It just seems that their are alot, but they are hidden from the public. Still the majority of folks dont know that buying a puppy from a petstore directly lines the pockets of these pathetic millers. The staff at these pet stores will tell the consumer that the puppies came from a local breeder ?????? What respectable breeder would ever give their puppies to a pet store, but what really boogles me is that these consumers buy the puppy, We live in an instant gratification world. I live in Canada....not many puppy mills here.
