hi there i am new to the forum.
i have a black labrador girl who has the bolo pads eg white hair around her front pads.i am gradually tracing her pedigree back to bolo.
she also has a white ring around her tail which can only be seen when the fur is pushed back.
the real query i have is does anyone know where the muttering comes from in her line?her mother did it and she does it with abundance!we have long conversations.
her mother was gairneyymoss mandy out of moriara mac lir and jopestel tina who were out of treckers pilot of moraira, hillside tina of moraira, ramornie beaver and refflyns heather jopestel.
does anyone else have a muttering lab?if so does their pedigree tie up?
also i know some labs smile!what line does that run through?
sorr probably a bit much for a first post!!

Sorry Fio. I don't have many of your dogs on my computer. I'm assuming though that they are working lines, certainly the Refflyns dogs I've got on are, running back through the Queen's Sandringham dogs, Holdgate and Hedenhampark. Jopestel Tina is of course Great Grand daughter to Drakeshead Breeze and Sandringham Dipper, both of which go back to Banchory Bolo. More important, they can be traced back to both Flapper and Munden Single. (I'll leave you to research the importance of those two dogs.) They also go back to a dog I particularly like the name of, born in 1919, Pigface Earnshaw!

Quite a few Labradors are natural orators, My Anna is a critic of guns who miss birds and the sire of my "Hoped to be" puppy loves nothing better than to hold a conversation with anyone who feels like a chat.

It's interesting to note that if you go back to the late 1800's/early 1900's that there were several "Patched" (Black and white) Labradors around. These days although rare, we do still get the occasional white blaze on the chest or white paw.

Pedigrees are facinating pieces of paper and by really studying them the whole history of the breed starts to unfold.

Flapper was by Barnett's Stag out of Bates Betsay
Munden Single was by Munden Sixty out of Munden Scottie

My black lab bitch mutters all the time, and she gets impatient if you don't answer so she nudges you with her nose, a bit like saying "Hey".

We always used to say that Purdey was either mumbling, or grumbling :D

Barking or whining during a field trial is an eliminating fault, so you wont find many breeders of working labs owning up to 'speaking' being inherant in their lines! ;-)

With regard to 'smiling' labradors, a couple of years ago I bred a litter using FTCh Conneywarren Russett of Birdbrook as the stud. Russ smiles (bares his teeth in a completely non-aggressive way) and a dog pup that I ran on from the litter had the same quirk. I undertsand that Russ' dam does the same thing.

My Lab doesn't mutter but she roars and  shrieks when she is excited - its a horrid sound LOL - she is of Balrion lines.
