Topic Dog Boards / General / Help Needed with Introducing a New Pup

Hello,

I need a bit of advice. I am going to be picking up my new boxer pup in a couple of weeks time and need a few tips on introducing her to my older bitch. Lolly, an 18 month old boxer, loves dogs and is very friendly towards others but she is really bossy. She met my new pup, Fizz, at her breeders at the weekend and made a big fuss which was all noise but made me a little nervous about their first intros at home.

I'm sure Lolly will be different in her own home as at her breeders she in constantly having to fight for her position in the heirarchy among 9 adult boxers and so is always ready to assert her dominance. She was also put into a crate in the hall while the pups were out which probably did make her an extra bit jealous. Does anyone have any advice to make this a little easier as I know Lolly will be fine after a couple of hours but want to minimise stress of the meeting for the pup.

Thanks,
Jen

The usual advice is to let them meet in the garden, not in the house, and always under full supervision. Older animals often resent young pups, so watch them very carefully for at least the first week, and make sure both have somewhere to get away from the other.

Thanks JeanGenie,

Sounds like a good plan. Will give it a try :)

Hi boxerlolly,  I haven't done this myself yet but I've been told it is very important to ensure your older dog still feels top dog in the house and if there is any friction between them, you should remove the puppy to another area rather than telling off and removing the older dog.  It must be difficult when obviously the natural thing is to feel protective towards the smaller puppy.  Very best of luck - hope all goes well.
