Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / which vitamin to stop coat dropping?
- By thomas-the-spot [gb] Date 14.02.05 18:29 UTC
Can anyone tell me the vitamin or oil which you need to help you stop your bitches coat dropping post whelping.  I think it was oil of primrose but I thought that was to stop phantoms so got a little confused.  If anyone has any suggestions they will be greatly appreciated. My older girl has only ever done this once but the one is present whelp has a thinner coat so am more concerned. HELP!!!!!

Don't think you can stop the coat dropping post-whelping.   It's the change in hormone levels, usually about 13 weeks post whelping, that does it in our breed, and the bitches look dreadful.

I suppose any of the evening primrose/borage/starflower oils might help a bit, but have never found anything to stop it.

Shes a dalmatian so although it will be bad not as bad as a hairy breed but as I show her it would be nice not to :)

In one of my  breeds they drop coat and the puppies are of show able age before the dam is ready to go back in the ring my 2nd breed dont although there coat thins a bit  With short coated breeds I would wait until she has had her puppies then when they are weaned bath her and then put her on primrose oil she i am sure will be back on top form soon

Bostic! ;)

<<Shes a dalmatian so although it will be bad not as bad as a hairy breed>>

In my experience Dalmatians are some of the worst. The short fur are like little needles and work into everything where the longer Labrador fur is more inclined to lay on the surface. On several occasions I actually had a dalmatian hair work it's way into my foot, and once even the back of my hand!

Dalmatians should have a health warning printed on the box! :d

How can you say that John they are very misunderstood little angels :) Well if I say it often enough I might believe it.

No matter what I buy their hairs get in I even found one in the fish tank the other night when I was cleaning it out.  Still wouldnt be without them hairs and all except when Thomas wakes me up halfway through the night for a wee.

Ps someone rung me up the other night and asked me if it was true they were odour free not got one of those either - if only.

Mine was definitely not "Oh Dear" free! ;)

Royal jelly is reccomended for dropping coats, borage and starflower  are the same things :)
You could also try bathing her in royal jelly shampoo available from Groomers,01635 299028.

Evening primrose is good for skin conditions.

Staffie hairs are exactly the same
Like little pins once they get in your feet. Just this lunchtime I had to get the tweezers out on one that had stuck itself in me.
And I know if it was the kids I'd be saying "Get something on your feet!

I would agree.  In my breed you are lucky to be able to get Mum back in the showring by the time her pups are old enough to be shown.

The best you can do is get the coat out as soon as possible and feed really well with a fat rich diet so that the new coat grows back quickly.  Sadly occasionally the coat grows back not quite right in colour or texture and wyou ahve to wait until the next moult to get their coats back.

I have had this happen to one of my girls in her last two litters, even though they weren't big litters and she stayed in excellent condition.  After her first litter of 9 pups for a petite bitch she grew back a good coat.

Her daughter on the other hand was showable at the end of December after having a litter first days of September.  So much so that she won the Group and was third for Best in show at a well supported Open show.  This one though never seems to be out of coat for long.

Don't suppose it will be such an issue with your shortcoated breed, and a diet with enough oils will soon have her coat loking nice.

In miniature horses to stop dandruff and give a shiny coat we feed black oiled sun flower seeds, not the striped, a small handfull daily,  Great for showing. Maybe might be able to be fed to dogs? Just a suggestion.

This is what it says about royal jelly, from the groomers info. booklet.

"Royal jelly shampoo contains 1% pure royal jelly direct from the bee hives of china. This shampoo was originally developed to help bitches that drop coat after litter, bad season,or just moulting. If used regularly,it will promote coat/hair growth on dog, cats, horses and even humans."

royal jelly food additive-"given to animals regularly this will help the promotion of hair growth. Most exhibitors use the food additive together with the shampoo"

You can get royal jelly capsules from most health food shops, but you can only get this good a quality shampoo direct from groomers. I give my dogs 1 royal jelly capsule daily, their coats shine, they have more energy, their appetites are great. Do a search on google, you should get plenty of info. :)

I like a product called "Restore" edited to say it doesn't stop coat drop but I think it is good for coat growth.

Where can you get it from Blue?  I have got a VIP judge coming up about 5 weeks after the pups leave home so I am open to ANY suggestions. :)

My daughter overheard me discussing Royal Jelly and thought it was the kind you had with ice cream!

here is the link, You can get it at most champshows for the same price. It is a little stall that has it , it may be this one.

I have used it for quite a few years now.

I recommended it to one of my newer show freinds who has been breeding and showing for about 15 years started using it last summer and she was quite impressed and quite quickly.

I agree Restore is one of the best supplements for coats. For coated breeds especially, it really gives a good growth of both under and top coat. It really does work.  I've found it  also helps fussy eaters' appetites greatly.
