We have an 9 week old staff.  We are trying to leave her some times in the pen Ive built in kitchen, so she is used to being alone for a few hours.  She usually goes in without a problem, settles in her basket, and sleeps.  When she wakes, she starts to cry, then its ok, then will crya agin 20mins later etc.  Whats the best thing to do, re-assure her we are there, leave her  or what???

i would just leave her as long your sure she isnt crying to go toilet ect.

the problem is, when we leave her, and she cries, when we return we put how out, and she goes.  But at other times, when she isnt crying, she gets put out and goes aswell, so there is no way of tell, unless of course she cries, we leave her and does one on the floor...................  but this hasnt happened yet, except for an over night accident the second night.

we didint have a pen or crate as we dont like them(seeour previous posts) so we didnt have this problem with our Staff she was in the spare bedroom with a child gate on the door and luckily she didnt cry but i would have to say leave her so long as she is ok, not in pain and not wanting to go to toilet. You will learn from her cry in time if any of the above apply. Is Cassie being put to the toilet before and after meals and first thing in the morning, last thing at night etc, if she is then I doubt the crying is a toilet problem probably just puppiness. has she got toys and stuff in her pen, she'll probably find something that will comfort her eventually

Coleystaff, thanks.    She will eventaully have rund of the house (or spare room depending on chewing!!) but we are living in spareroom whilst main bedroom is being decorated, which is dependant on some other works being done, hopefully all sorted by mid march..................

She goes out first thing, when normally she can hardly contain herself, after meals, and after a sleep (we usually find she needs to Pee then) and of course before bed time...........

sounds like Cassie is getting the best start in life, which of course is so important with Staffs. She'll love the bedroom it will be her own special place and more importantly she wont feel closed in. The only thing that Giorgia chewed was a small hole in the plaster in the wall, she didint touch the furniture which is pine, or the sofa bed so we are really pleased with her. As they approach 18 weeks onward this is how I remember it they stop having their accidents on the carpet and the toilet business gets better and better until the accidents stop completely. What colour is she
