Hi
I'm just enquiring about the age of stud dogs. Is there an age limit?
Only reason I ask, I know of a litter, the sire was 11yrs old, apparently he had been put into retirement, however the younger stud dog which was supposed to be used would'nt do the job! so out came the 11yr old willing & obviously able.

I had a litter of 8 puppies 2 years ago to a 12-year old champion.  I like using older dogs because firstly they must be healthy to have attained that age and still be fit enough to mate.  Secondly if there were any problems with his progeny they would be apparent by then, and he could be avoided, also I would probably have seen enough of his offspring to know the general type I would get.

I had my largest litter (6) by an 11 yr old. A week later he sired a litter of 5. he lived till he was 16, so 11 wasn't all that old really. I think the largest litter ever in our breed was sired by a dog of 13

The dad to my lot is now 11 and still going strong.  Think it just depends on dog and  breed!
