I see the  registration figures for last year are 45.381 labs registerd with KC and then add at least as many with Dog lovers  reg no wonder we have been so busy in rescue  38 dogs  since 1 st of Jan  thats just our rescue. second largest number was cockers

It's absolutly sickening Mattie. They wont be happy with this over breeding until thay have ruined the breed we love!

Best wishes, John

Or more stringent controls are placed on all breeders and it will become more expensive and ruin breeds, as only those with the money will be able to breed and many will not have the knowledge to do it properly!

Only 118 registered in my breed compared to 122 last year, and 108 the year before that.  Been quite a few years since we had over 150 pups registered in a eyar, and despite this two litters in 2003 were bred by puppy farmers.

ours is 126 - up from last year by quite a bit.

We had 44 in our breed registered last year, I think making about 250 in the breed in total now.  Luckinly these are not all dogs bred in this country as quite a few new imports were brought in too.  I'm glad that we've had such a steady rise over the last 13 years and I hope that people continue doing it steadily so that we don't end up with the problems that other breeds have.  Fingers crossed that this continues!

Can anyone tell me how many dogue de bordeaux was reg last year.
- By Emily Rose [gb] Date 12.02.05 20:52 UTC
According to the BRS there were 1,593 DDBs registered in 2004, up from 1,238 in '03
Emily :)

That is terribly high for such a new breed!!!!  Good grief my breed has been here since the 1870's and at our peak registrations were just undewr the 400 mark, at that point a need for rescue was identified as some of the breed had found their way into the wrong kind of breeders hands.

I know, I thought it was extreme too, and had to double check, considering they are still on the import register :( There seems to be alot of poor examples cropping up in my area unfortunatley, breed by people who obviously don't have their best interests at heart. How is there so many in such a short space of time?
One of my breeds, the wire-haired vizsla, only had it's first litter in this country in 1992 and there was less than 200 registered last year(my new little man being one of them :D) and that seems a sensible number for a breed on the rare breeds list. My other breed, the smooths, still had less than 900 registered last year and there are a 'ticket breed'!
It would be intersting to hear from anyone in DDBs who knows anything about their welfare situation, or anyhting else of interest :)

God, this is so worrying.  Myself and 3 friends imported our breed into the country just over 13 years ago and we only have about 250 in total in the country.  I'm worried about my breed and hope that it doesn't go this way it would mean disaster for us.  I don't know how anybody can import a new breed into the country and not think about it's well being, but when they ask the prices they do for them, it's not surprising that the numbers are like this.

Hi, where do you find out these figures? I had a look on the KC website but can't see anything that gives you the figures for all breeds, just the top ten.  I'm wondering how many Irish Terriers were registered.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.02.05 12:47 UTC
Do you know the dalmatian figures, mattie?
- By Polly [gb] Date 13.02.05 13:49 UTC
These figures are given in the back of the Breed Record Supplemnts which are published every quarter by the KC
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 13.02.05 13:58 UTC
They are also in this weeks DogWorld.
- By mattie [gb] Date 13.02.05 20:48 UTC

Terrible Mattie,

What bugs me the most is ( excluding working lines)  that there are more and more being bred but less and less being shown.

Our breed club show is in 4 weeks and we have 20 entries, 10 down on last year.   :-((    You see more odd looking westies getting that breed standard type. Such a shame in any breed affected by this popularity.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 14.02.05 10:20 UTC
Goodness what breed have you blue.  We only have two breed clubs (To be honest the Scottish club wouldn't be able to regiter today as there are very few Scottish members as there are no breeders left where once it was a hotbed for the breed).

The Ntional Breed club gets around 80 dogs at the Open show and 100 or more at the Championship show with probably half that number for the Scottish shows.

If yours is a breed once popular with numbers dropping maybe you now have too many club shows, and some should maybe hold amalgamated shows?
- By Blue Date 14.02.05 11:06 UTC
Brainless it is Pam :-) westies of course.

There are very few Scottish exhibitors now.  Far more English ones.

We only hold 2 shows the champshow which most come to from all over for the CC's but the open show is only once a year.   This year entries may be worse as we are holding it before crufts ( may have been a bad idea) but never the less I think , if puppy registrations are going up the show entries should also.

Just my opinion though ;-)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 14.02.05 11:31 UTC
Then I think it very poor support foir a club show.  We get better entries than that in our breed at a popular show like the Nordic Open show,a nd we have registrations under 150 pups a year,a nd our avergae champ show entry with CCs is 40 to 70 with Group Show, Crufts and Club show obviously drawing higher entries.

To get extra support eh Scottish Club show hold their Open show the day after the Hound Associatuion of Scotland (where the breed has CCs) and people make a weekend of it.
- By Blue Date 14.02.05 15:42 UTC
Brainless,

100% poor support for the club. Real shame I think.

It was always held after scottish breeds so we could get the English exhibitors but it really didn't help with entries.

Just have to plow on though and not give up. We could do with more younger ones taking part.  Too many happy at home attending puppies :-)))

In our rescue we get a lot of labs brought in with the Dog Lovers certificates so I would think its quite feasable to double the KC figures to show a true amount of labradors bred in this country as most of the puppy farmers are now using the DL as there are no rules and its easy to pass these registration certificatse on to unsuspecting people its amazing how many sign their dogs in here and when I point out the certificate(not that we  would refuse any lab) they are amazed they have assumed its KC.
The big Puppy Outlets   in the North always sell dogs with these certificates but people are ignorant and dont know the difference
