Sam has just been out for his second walk in 2 1/2 months off the lead that is, because of health problems. He has now managed to cut one of his back pads there is quite a lot of blood but he doesn't seem to flinch at all when I touch it. I can't believe it he is 12 months old and has been to the vet more times than any other dog we've had. He is on antibiotics anyway should this just heal naturally he's not due to see the vet until Friday.

What I usually do is to dip the whole paw in warm, salt water to get any dirt out. If there isn't a large flap of skin hanging and he doesn't seem bothered by it, I would leave it - bathe it after walks and let the vet check it when you go :)

Hi Daisy.

Well I had to go to the vet in the end coz he kept licking his testicles and when I looked they were red raw he has probably scratched them so now he is constantly licking so I was more worried about that in the end. I have to put Fuciderm around the area. I did what you said with bathing his paw and it has stopped bleeding but still looks nasty, the vet wanted to stitch it but we decided against that as he's  only just had 2 general anaesthetics  and he can't wear a buster collar as he had an op on his neck so he would soon have the stitches out. I'm going to let nature take its course and hope for the best. Thanks for your advice.
best wishes

Just to let you know I had to leave Sam at the vets unfortunately they do need to stitch his pad. It just keeps opening up, there is no infection though it just needs a bit of help in bringing together. I was hoping we could avoid this but it was not to be!

Perhaps you should consider doing something to harden up his pads? walking on the lead on pavements helps.

Poor Sam, hope he's better now.  If you get some Homeopathic Arnica 30c from your Chemist / Health food shop, it'll help the healing process and help him get over the shock of the ops.

Thanks for your replies. Sam is doing very well he has to see the vet on Wednesday to get his pad redressed. He is on different antibiotics Ceporex this time and Zincaderm for 3 weeks which is to aid healing and contains Vitamin A.
