Can anyone tell me if a puppy needs to have a rabies vaccination to be exported to Finland, I know that if a puppy travels before 12wks of age to Poland it does not need the rabies, is it the same for Finland and does the price of vaccination and blood test vary fron vet to vet???

How about France too? :d
yes puppies going to france need-
1. micropchip
2. normal vacinations
3. rabies vaciantion
4 to be at least 10 weeks old
5 to have the pets passport
you do not have to do the blood test and wait for 6 months

Mine's being exported, though there again the family are English so more than likely they wd. come back. Not under PETS.
We have exported 3 dogs to Finland. They do not need a rabies vaccination and can travel as young as 8 weeks of age. In common with all EU countries, you now need to obtain a pet passport to enter the new country, but this is just a bureucratic requirement and can be obtained at a reasonable price from the vet.
It is a couple of years since we sent the last dog out, but if I remember correctly, it is also required to permanently identify. We used a tattoo, but a microchip is also okay. We also neede a health certificate signed by a vet.
If you use a Scandanavian carrier, SAS or Finnair, the puppy can travel in the cabin as hand-baggage providing the total weight of dog + carrier does not exceed 9 kilos. Once on board, the puppy can be taken from the carrier and can sit on the accompanying passenger's lap.

Hi, i am a bit confused as i am exporting a puppy to Finland and have been told by my vet the puppy needs.... A rabies vaccine which cant be done til 12 wks of age, and done 30 days before travel. Microchip, pet passport. and a wormer done by the vet. ???after reading the posts i am not sure now if the pup will need a rabies or not. I rang defra and they said they werent sure rules had changed recently and to ask my vet. Has any body heard any different? Thanks .
Have the people in Finland check with their local goverment to see what they demand.
They can also check with the airline. Especially about general rules for importing dogs (the rules may differ slightly for pups between 8 and 12 weeks). The airline usually know what they need before accepting an animal.
I checked with the following people :
-airline
-customes
-vet
-goverment rules here in the Netherlands
-goverment rules in the UK
Be prepaired to here different stories (I did) and just go for the rules that are most common.
Hi,
here you have a link to the current rules for importing a pup to Finland:
http://www.mmm.fi/el/raj/tuo_elaimet_EU3.7.2004_en.html
Here you have Finnair rules for transportation:
"Pets in the cabin
Small pets such as dogs, cats and pet rodents (i.e. guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits) can be carried in the cabin on flights. The total weight of the pet and the transportation cage, bag or box must not exceed 8 kg/17 lb. and the maximum dimensions for the transportation box are the same as for hand baggage (55 + 40 + 20 cm/22 + 16 + 8 in.). The height must not exceed 25 cm/10 in. to ensure that it fits under the seat in all of our aircraft types. The airline has the right to refuse transportation if the transportation bag, box or cage is too big for transportation in the cabin or if the animal is too big for the box or bag. The animal may also be moved the hold if the above mentioned dimensions are exceeded.
One passenger can only have one transportation box or bag, because it must fit under the seat in front of the passenger during take-off and landing. The whole animal must remain in the box/bag throughout the entire journey. A soft bag is easer to fit under the seat than a hard box. The bag must be made for transportation of cats or dogs, and it must not leak at the base. Bags specially designed for transportation of animals are available at well-equipped pet shops."
Hope the info helps you.
Bon voyage!
<The whole animal must remain in the box/bag throughout the entire journey.>
This may be the official policy, but we have photos that prove otherwise!
Yes Snomaes, it all depends on the crew...
I hope I will have a pet loving crew when we take our puppy on board.
Hope I don't have to keep him in the travel-bag all the time. Even though it's just an hours flight.
I printed all the documents with rules that I found just to be safe since all the rules changed in July 2004 (mandatory are passport, chip/tattoo and if younger than 8 weeks a declaration that the animal has nog been in contact with wild animals) and found out
that not all departments are aware of this.
So Have everything on paper in both english and dutch. Pitty on any customs officer trying to stop me from bringing the pup home :D
It also helps that my best friend worked at customs on the airport I'm landing here in the Netherlands and her boyfriend still works there.
Don't think that they will try to stop me ;)
