Whilst checking Holly's mouth this evening I've noticed that she's got a broken tooth. It's one of her puppy teeth and it's the sharp pointy one that sits between the front teeth and the ones at the back (I'm not very good at dentistry :D)
It's snapped almost completely off at gum level and is painful to touch. She's constantly licking her lips and has been chewing stones today. The tooth is pointing in to the middle of her mouth and is hanging by a thread.
What should I do about this? When the tooth falls out will the root need removing? Should she see the vet in the morning if the tooth is still attached?
Thanks,
Fiona

Fiona - I posted a question like this not long ago
broken puppy toothHowever are you sure hers is broken ? She is older (20 weeksish isn't she?) and would be teething now so it may be that the puppy one is falling out but attached slightly and what you think is part of it in her gum could be her adult one ? Just a thought

Think you are right Saraw. If it's hanging by a thread give it a pull, or leave it to nature, bet it's gone by now anyway. The pointed teeth (canine) or the front (incisors) are the ones that come out first, and often start at about 4 to 5 months. Even if it is broken don't worry to much it will sort it's self out when the second teeth come through. Jackie H

Just thought this is a time when the puppy will want to chew and if you don't provide it the pup will find something for it's self. JH

Another thought Fiona - puppy teeth do not really have roots. When you do find one they have lost it is amazing to think how they've stayed in the mouth as there doesn't seem to be anything to have held them there - just a jagged edge !
With Phoebies I knew it was broken as it was just the "pointy" bit that had snapped off - only about 1/2 the tooth and not at her gum line.

Thanks for the replies.
The broken tooth is on the left side of her jaw and is virtually broken through at the the gum line. The top tooth on the other side of her jaw is very wobbily (?sp) and both permanent teeth are coming through very well.
If I can manage it without hurting her and getting bitten would it be ok to cut through the thread with claw clippers? Or is that a really daft idea?
I keep checking her mouth every hour or so and the tooth is still there, it doesn't seem to hurt her too much though.
Thanks,
Fiona

Fiona, she isn't going to sit still and let you cut through it with clippers :-)
It would be safer just to give her something to chew on or if you really feel that it needs to come out, get hold of it with your fingers and yank it hard.
If its not bothering her, I would let nature deal with it :D

Well you never know, she might sit still for me, then again pigs might fly. :D :D
It doesn't seem to be bothering her too much, she keeps licking her lips but it's not digging into the roof of her mouth at all. Sshe's still chewing her pigs ear and her weird shaped rubber toy thingy so she can't be in any pain.
thanks,
Fiona

Fiona, if you pull it out, you'll have to leave a sixpence under her pillow. Leave it to nature and spend the money on the kids instead.

When one of Holly's back teeth came out last week Eloise, 4, put it under Holly's bed in her crate. When she got up the next morning she was thrilled to discover the 'doggy tooth fairy' had left a dog biscuit for Holly :D

Well one of them has come out this morning, but the original one is still there. Having just read one of the above posts properly and discovered that puppy teeth are supposed to be jagged at the root end, I'm not worried at all now. I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't rub on the roof of her mouth but other thatn that I'll leave well alone.
Holly's tooth is now sitting on the window sill in an egg cup waiting for bed time so the 'tooth fairy' can leave another biscuit for her. The things we do for our kids :D :D

Hi B! Thanks for asking!
It's like Pepper has always been with us. She is absolutely wonderful! She's your typical "velcro" type and follows me everywhere. Having said that, she's never under my feet. She's a very good guard dog and barks whenever anyone approaches the house. She is fabulous with the kids and doesn't herd them unless they get too far ahead of me on walks. Pepper is great off the lead and constantly comes back to check in with me. Her recall is also very good. She had some basic training before she came to us but we found out a few weeks ago she can speak on command too! Getting an older dog has really been ideal for us. In fact, I think I may have found my "heart" dog in this funny wiggle butt aussie. :)

Oh Quinn,
You have a "wigglebutt puppy" & its even a Pepperdog too!!!! All in one :D :D WB puppies are so fun. The whole body just shows appreciation. .I just don't understand how some people believe they fall down & are unstable.

hmmmm.
