I am looking for light coloured chocolate labs, called silver labs in the States. If you are a breeder, please contact me at Mdubose44@aol.com. I live in London.

I think they are solely a US phenomenon.

I do hope this craze for multi coloured Labradors does not take off. I would hate to have to breed too many more yellow with Chocolate spots! 8 litters from my poor Anna is almost enough!

Never thought of that Margo! ;)
Seriously though, these breeders of designer colours make me heartily sick and do the breed a great disservice.
Why do I say that? Silver Labradors are not just rare, they are almost non existent. So how do these foolish people breed them? The only way they can. They mate their silver bitch to the only silver dog they can find. OK the first time, but they then find they can sell them to gullible fools for big money so they breed the bitch out using the only dog they know of. But what happens then? They have multiple litters from the same pairing and the only way on from there is extremely close mating, even to brother/sister matings. There is no choice, the usable gene pool is minuscule. The problems from that are obvious. The possibility of hereditary defects is virtually a certainty. OK. So the so called breeders have then ruined Labradors of that colour, but unfortunately it does not end there. Some person is going to want to breed from their silver bitch they brought at an exorbitant price from the so called breeder for no better reason than the fact that she's a bitch and because they cannot find (or more likely can't be bothered to look for) a silver stud dog uses the nearest available male, be it black or yellow. The puppies from this mating will of course not be silver so all the problems of that colour brought about by rank bad breeding practises is out into the breed as a whole!
Do you get the feeling I'm not happy with these so called breeders? Damn right I'm not!

I know that you and I have the opposite view here, John, but to me, there can ONLY be black labradors :D :D :D
(OK - I knew you'd say ONLY yellow :D)
OK then - just black and yellow..... :D

The reason I like yellows Margo is that if a gun decides to take a potshot at a Fox in the wood he would have a lot harder job trying to argue that he mistook my dog for one! In actual fact I love all of them, I just hate what some people are doing to them. :)

The following taken from http://www.labbies.com/silver.htm
The AKC Stand on Registration of Silver Labradors:
Response of Jack Norton of the AKC on 1/24/00 giving AKC official position on the issue of Silver Labs.
The registry of the American Kennel Club is based on parentage and not the coat color of a member of any breed.
In 1987 the AKC, in corporation with the Labrador Retriever Club of America, conducted an inquiry into the breeding of litters that contained members that were registered as silver. An AKC representative was sent to observe these dogs. The report and color photographs of these dogs were reviewed by AKC staff and representatives of the Labrador Retriever Club of America. Both Parties were satisfied that there was no reason to doubt that the dogs were purebred Labrador Retrievers, however they felt that the dogs were incorrectly registered as silver. Since the breed standard at the time described chocolate as ranging in shade form sedge to chocolate, it was felt that the dogs could more accurately be described as chocolate rather than silver. This remains the current policy of the American Kennel Club.

Anwen, If you want a black and yellow Lab look no further. I own just that. Emma my yellow bitch loves helping me get coal out of the cellar. Pale yellow Lab, excellent temperament, large black bib and ears :D

In the formative years of Labradors it was not uncommon to find "Patched" Labradors and even now an occasional paw or chest blaze is seen. My Lucy had such a blaze on her chest!

Personally, I think Emma just has the 'odd one out syndrome' all my other girls are black. :D
How about duel coated back & chocolate Lab??? My Tillys one of them, she goes out black, half way thru she goes for a swim then finds the softest earht, digs for gold, making sure she throws it all underneath so she`s coated all over & turned into a choc.lab :D :D
