Topic Dog Boards / General / How Long Before Rescues are Rehomed?
- By Christine Date 29.01.05 19:25 UTC
Hi all, the rescue centre here has asked me to find out what length of time are found dogs kept until they can be rehomed, so can any resue people, or people who know tell us please? And what happens if an owner comes along after a dog has been rehomed? Talking about dogs that haven`t been chipped etc, thanks :)

Have just had a black Labrador handed in to me earlier today, he was found on Thursday & the woman rang me last night, said he was ok for the night with her & as she`s just round the cornwer from vet said she`d take him this morning to scan for chip, anyway he doesn`t have one. He looks really well looked after & no callouses so has had soft bed all his life, he`s no more than 2yrs. Not a lot we can do till Monday so said he can stay with me for few dys. He`ll probably go on the tv with vet on Wednesday & expect he`ll be in great demand, Labs are very popular here as well!!! So thats the reason for the question above. But I`m really hoping he`s got somehow lost & we`ll find his owner :)

Battersea keep them for 7 days before rehoming them :)

Newcastle shelters keep them also for seven days and if the owner turns up after that it is to late.

Thanks guys, will pass the info on :) It`s not often they have lost dogs here, more abandoned :( they were thinking 10dys/2wks but when you think about it if you lost your dog you`d be contacting everyone & first port of call would be police/rescue centre.......

In Edinburgh the dogs are sold after 7 days but if an owner turns up inside 30 days of the dog being admitted, the dog goes back to original owner and purchaser gets a refund. A scary thought for me.

As far as I know, down south dogs have to be held for 7 days for the original owner to claim tham. After that if they're rehomed, then tough. They belong to the new owner.

I have just rehomed a rottie pup and she was due to be pts after her 7 days were up if no owners came for her.  They actually remain the property of the local council you only adopt them, yep £90 to adopt a stray from this council each one has a different price I think.  I can get her spayed at a choice of 4 vets in the area free of charge but she has to be neutered, the council have the right to come check on her and take her back at ANY time in the future according to the paperwork I've got and had to sign, they also microchip I suppose so they can check where the dog is, you also cannot rehome or move the dog on for 1 year after you have adopted said animal.

How is Merry getting on now? SSPCA  also charge more for " single breeds" as they put it. Seems funny putting a little Rottie pup on death row after only 7 days when they allow other dogs to be adopted after this time - was there a reason? Our local pound is now refusing to rehome staffies due to "inappropriate ownership" Im told, which is a terrible shame.

Thanks guys, all info being passed on :)
They`re very surprised its such a short length of time they`re kept for!

This young fellers lovely, he`s been very well looked & cared after, I can`t believe someones not out there looking for him but up to now no reports of him missing coming in......posters going up of him hopefully bit later today round the area he was lost, also in vets.

It might be worth checking on the law in Spain, figures quoted are for this country and only if the dog comes from a pound, if you pick up a stray & keep it then the owner can reclaim it at any time.
- By Christine Date 31.01.05 19:01 UTC
Problem is tho Ingrid, there is no law defining it here :(
But there is a law that if a stray has been found & the owner can be traced, if the owner hasn`t reported the loss to the police within 24hrs they are fined!!! Our local rescue are all legit, registered, got the backing of town hall, police, vets etc but are volunteers who have other jobs & doing this in their spare time.
There is no specific labrador rescue & he`s only here with me cos I help the local all breed rescue, I just don`t want the poor mite going thru the trauma of their kennels & they are more than happy for him to stay with me till he goes home or new one is found & I`m known thru my own Labs :) In fact a couple yrs ago they asked me if I could look after some dogs for them, I took 6 of their dogs while their kennels were being built :)
As I said, not too many lost dogs here, more abandoned :(

She's wonderful a delight to have around the house, she's been with us about a mth now and has decided she's stopping and is definitely MY dog, so my daughter is working her too so she doesn't guard me when I'm sick.  She's just started to play properly and bark when she's playing so we're sure she's happy with us and the schips, she's also worked out that rotties can reach most worktops and get food off them, so she's teamed up with my jumping schip to become the wrecking crew of the house, the schips jumps up and scouts the worktop then passes stuff down to Merry.

She was picked up by the dog warden and they only keep them for 7 days especially that close to Xmas so many were about and things got worse afterwards.  We've had schip rescues come to us from Vets who've recognised them as a kc registered breed not a cross and saved them from pts, they were the very vets doing the pts, apparently where Merry came from they collect the dogs on a friday if they've not been claimed or rehomed in their alotted time.

I think you will find that is normal rehoming policy, but I would like to see someone try taking Laddie back now! I've had him for 8 years!!! I have had a few rescues and all the rehoming policies said they could take the dog back at anytime if not happy and so on and so forth, but they never check, and anyway, if you are looking after the dog properly, which no doubt you are, why would they ever take her back? I was also told I couldn't take my dog out of England without their permission. He went to Wales last year! :p And he chased the sheep!

Enjoy your Rottie pup, she has landed on her paws. :-)

Lovely to hear Merry is so at home now and Im very impressed at how quickly youve picked up on Rottweiler character traits :) Morse and Echo were lucky they lived in Edinburgh or theyd both be dead.

It's very sad the different outlooks around the country for strays :(

Just an update on the lost dog I`ve been looking after. The vets tv slot was cancelled, they`ve got a tourism promotion for the town going on all week so it`ll be next Wednesday now :(
I decided on Thursday morning that I couldn`t look after him any longer & rang the rescue & arranged for him to go stay with them. It wasn`t fair on my own dogs or me. He`s younger than I first thought, maybe only 12mths, as he came out of himself you could see this. I`ve been really niave thinking he was lost, but I really believed once the found posters were put around & the vets had them in clinics his owners would be here in a flash. He went yesterday lunchtime, with him they`ve now got 36 dogs in all :( All dogs are kept till homes are found & none pts :)
So I`ll still take him along when the vet goes on tv, he goes on 4.30 pm ish & the helpers can`t make it at that time & I`m contacting everyone I can think of trying to see if theres a good home for him cos he`s lovely dog. At least he had a nice time while he was here, got to run aroud the fields, warm dry bed (even tho the vet bed is in about 5 pieces now  ) and got a nice full tum every day with as many bones as he wanted to chew :)

ps he went yesterday afternoon....

I work at dogs trust and the strays that come in are kept for 7 days to give the owners chance to reclaim them. If the dog has been rehomed after the 7 days then there is nothing we can do unfortunately. I wouldnt like to think it was my dog but I suppose as long as they have a good home and are loved and well looked after then thats the most important thing.

Fortunately Dogs trust never put a healthy dog down, they have to be very ill or something wrong with them mentally.

Held for seven days in the Wirral Pound and then are rehomed (hopefully)

Thanks :)
Think they`re going to stay with 10-14dys, but like I say, not many lost dogs here, all seem to be abandoned :(
