My Ridgeback has been burping a lot lately - does anyone know if this is a symptom of any particular illness I should look out for.  As with most RR he does inhale his food(!), and we place a large stone on top of his dog bowl to try and regulate the speed  at which he eats. We have also started feeding via a treat dispenser.   The burping is usually within a half hour to an hour of eating, but it more and more like  a human burp !   Is this normal , I can't find anything on 'wind' in my dog books.  He is never fed before exercise, usually no more than one hour after.  Any views/words of wisdom would be welcome , as he is our first dog, so our experience is limited.

Our dog is 11 months and when i took him to the vet a couple of days ago, he did a very loud human like burp in the waiting room!!  I was quite embarrassed!  Although I definately can't offer you expert advice or an opinion, i can say that our boy does burp every now and then.  My guess is that it is normal but i am sure other more experienced people will offer you better advice soon.

if you're really worried, get him checked out by the vet :)

both my dogs do this and like humans, some are more gassy than others ;) My boy burbs like a man, but then he is a complete slob in all other areas as well :P he loves his food, is always sniffing about the floor for more, so takes in a lot of air, I guess it has to come out somewhere, although, thankgod, his rear end wind is very rare :)

Diet could have something to do with it, I find that some foods make my dogs  more gassy than others.

Thanks for that - vet says nothing apparently wrong . It is funny in some ways , but not when you have company!   Generally the whole room goes silent, and people get a funny look on their face  and then someone will say - did he just burp?! He is a real lad, with a ladish sence of humour !  So guess taht figures really .  Thankfully there are not too many backblasts since we changed  his food as a pup  - we were loosing friends fast at dog training!

Hi.  I have a Bull Mastiff who burps regularly.  He is 3 1/2 years old.  I think it is just the same as us humans and that he needs to expel wind.

I dont think it is anything to worry about.  It certainly hasnt caused my dog any problems.

We have an Akita who loves to eat his dinner then come up and burb - straight in your face.

Anwen, exacly the same as my Patterdale that is.

Only does it to me though, even when I leave the room he comes in to burp infront of me. I think it may be because im the one who feeds him every meal. Maybe its a thankyou. Like in the Chinese culture, its polite to burp after a meal, showing you enjoyed it?

But it's all a matter of scale, Gonzo!!! Think I'd rather your Patterdale than my Akita - his gratitude is just a bit overwhelming :D

LOL, probably right :p

Still, it is a proper belch though ;)

My Anton's also like a man thinks it's fun to burp right in your face and then he's always checking that his bits are still there :d  I'm sure that he was born a male human being previously, he's a good snogger though so that's one good thing going for him!
