My girl was mated 28th and 30th Dec, about two 1/2 weeks later she became lethargic and 'not herself' then developed clear watery discharge, took her to the vets who put her on antirobe twice daily. Due back at vets Monday. Finished antibiotics last night but I noticed the discharge is back, still clear and watery she seems fine in herself - what is going on?????? Doesn't seem like a pyo. She is displaying symptoms of pregnancy (belly and teats bigger). But there seems to be a steady discharge (it doesn't smell). Any ideas - Monday seems a long way off!

My girl had a discharge similar to this on and off all the way through her pregnancy. It was more stringy towards the end of pregnancy and she went on to deliver 11 healthy puppies. I would not worry too much if the discharge is clear/opaque and doesn't smell offensive. Good luck.

Not wanting to disagree with your vet - but a clear / mucous discharge is normal during pregnancy. I would not personally put a bitch on antirobe whilst pregnant. (just my opinion) If the discharge is excessive or coloured or foul smelling then this could potentially be a problem.

When my girl had a discharge during pregnancy, the only drug my vet would give was Synulox, she said anything else was dangerous to the pregnancy!
She went on to have a healthy litter of 8

Synulox would be my preference if antibiotics were absoloutely neccesary. :)

same here, Synulox would be the only antibiotic I would use during pregnancy and lactation
I decided not to wait till monday so had emergency appointment last night, he's changed the antibiotics to Noroclav 125mg twice daily, says he doesn't think she's pregnant and if the discharge doesn't clear up in two weeks he wants to spay her. He took a blood test on the first visit but hasn't swabbed or scanned, seems to be working on the pyo theory even tough the discharge is clear and watery not pus like. I really want to avoid spaying her as I'd really like a pup from her. Any suggestions???? She's still well in herself. Unfortunately I couldn't go to the vets myself my husband had to take her.....

Have you considered having her scanned to confirm whether she is pregnant or not.
I asked husband to ask vet to do it but I think he forgot.......she's not due back at vets for two weeks now...I wish I'd been able to go myself...if it is a pyo and she's not pregnant (worse case scenario) is there anything we can do other than spay?

Two weeks is an extremely long time if your vet really thinks this is a pyo!! Is there another vet in the practice whom you could obtain a second opinion and arrange a scan? Like I said earlier my bitch had a discharge similar to what you describe and went on to have a healthy litter of 11 puppies.

I'd be happier giving her Noroclav than antirobe. :)
I'd go to the vets on Monday for a scan - that way they can diagnose pregnancy (or not) & can check the state of her uterus & see if it looks like pyo.
If she is well in herself & has a clear vaginal discharge post mating I wouldn't be too concerned - but I would scan. :)
Hi, I wanted to make two points.
One a clear discharge is normal in many pregnancy's though our vet didnt know either !!!
Two , many vets have actually performed one ten or fifty scans and really to be honest arent that goos at it. After all you wouldnt aks a GP to scan you would you , you would go to a sonographer ( excuse spelling) .
If you do go for a scan I would recommend using someone who does nothing else but scans if you can find someone, I only know one and she is in Beds. She scans farm animals for a living and genuinely gets it right . I am sure there are other similar people in other areas. This is normally done at about 5 weeks , not 3 and not 8 .
hope this helps even if only next time. Best of luck
Just to let you know that my girl has aborted :( She's still on the antibiotics. Should I try again with her or have her spayed???? What would you do?

sorry to hear about youre girl if i were u i would consider changing vets if youre girl gets a clean bill of health and you feel happy with trying her again i cant see any proplems

If you remember, my girl lost a litter at the start of the summer, we had LONG talks with my vet about either trying again or spaying, as she had had a litter before no problems, my vet said to give it one more go........we did and just before Christmas she had a litter of 8 pups!
So you really need to speak to your vet, but the final choice has to be yours!
Good luck and sorry to hear about your loss :-(
