Normally I don't take my dog when visiting people but if I do he always wants to pee in their house even though I make sure that he has gone before we go in. Is this a male thing? I always dread it now when they say bring the dog the thing is he always looks so proud after it wagging his tail.
My male dog did this at my sisters house, she said the previous owners had cats so we think he may have smelt the cats wee as the house was a tip, he hasn't done it anywhere else though
I had a friend's dog come into my house and pee in the bedroom

Must admit I laughed. Hubby didn't. I won't name the dog as he is no longer with us, but he was rather cute (and big, and hairy.....) ;)

For the first time ever my 13 month GSP dog did it on Christmas Day, whilst visiting my friends house......right up her £800 Osborne & Little curtains!!! :-( Oh my god! He has been there numerous times before, we have stayed overnight there on several occasions and there have been no additions or changes to her own menagerie of cats and one dog. She laughed, but her husband went a bright shade of puice and the hairs on the back of his neck started standing upright. Needless to say we ended up coming home pronto. Happy ****** Christmas that was!
Ouch! A discerning little dog :) How are you feeling after your op, Gunner?

Mmmmmm......discerning, you reckon? I can think of other words that were used at the time, but I'll leave that to your imagination! Myself? I'm absolutely knackered - totally lacking in energy, which is so unlike me. However, on the plus side, I've dropped at least one dress size if not almost two after 12 days without food!! :-) Can't wait to get back to being my old self again though and doing things with the horses and, of course, his nibs! ;-)
Thanks for asking....what are you up to nowadays?
Jan
Hi Jan, be pateint, it does take time to recover from the perforated appendix - mine went when my son was 3 months old. Nowadays Im persevering with Echo's recall and keeping the troops in line with his training :D Try finding a secure area to practice recall with a dog who can clear 5ft without effort. We've had a couple of scares with him - OH feels he's reliable when he is a teenage dog with hormone overdrive. This morning he slippped his collar and ran to another dog, last night he tried playing hide n seek with Mother, and of course opening front door and visiting his arch enemy next door is always good for a laugh. He's at the testing stage and is discovering Mum will be tough at times.

Copper did this a couple of times at my mums house but it was only after she got the pup and then a rescue cat as well. I of course scoffed when she suggested Cops had pee'd in the bedroom but then I saw him doing it in the livingroom as well. Definitely a territory scent thing as he is 100% clean in the house normally. He hasn't done it since although if the two dogs are out and the pup has a pee, Copper has to do one in the exact same spot.

Sorry to say this is very common, especially if the house has dogs or cats of their own, or the dog is ill at ease (it wants the reasurance of the place smelling like hom, or cover up the other animals scent).
It is one reason why I won't look after anyones male dogs, even the castrated ones do it, though usually only ofr the first day or two.
I do watch any visiting males very carefully, and warn their owners that they may try to do it. They are usually quite shocked until they catch them about to cock. :D

It's not just dogs either. I had a very bossy bitch who who always cock (ever so delicately) where there were other animals.

My spayed female cocks her leg up as high as she can on tree's etc. when we are out on walks, but she squats normally when she goes out in our yard.I figure she feels she doesnt need to mark her territory at home, like she does when we are out, anyone else have an explanation for this?
The number one reason why i will never have an entire male is because they do tend to pee/mark inside,i've had 2 dogs in the past who have done this and one continued after he was neutered, hence the reason why i get both male and females desexed at 6mths.,to avoid this problem happening to begin with.
Bailey,is your dog neutered? If not, why? Getting him done will more than likely cure the habit.

I don't see a way round this bailey. Unfortunately, as others have said, many dogs do it for the various reasons mentioned. A neutered dog I had a few years ago now, used to do this whenever we went into anybodys house, yet he was extremely clean at home, I used to make sure that he was as empty as I could get him before we went  He even did it in our local pub (oh the shame) He was very calm and laid back but just had to mark his territory, no matter how vigilant we were with watching him.
I have an uncastrated male now, we haven't suffered with him doing this either inside our home or anybody elses and I take him absolutely everywhere with me, including the local :) It just depends on the dog and it's agenda. With my old dog, I eventually stopped taking him to other peoples houses, it was a relief for us, them and him. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :)
Rose, the big and hairy dog was owned by a CDer. She knows who he is ;)
I haven't had a male for a long time before I kept one from my last litter. I watch him very closely, no matter where we go. I think it may be because of A...... :D I learnt from him ;) It's just a natural thing for them to do.

Anton my wonderful, gorgeous, loving Spanish Water Dog is always clean in my house and my friends. As I've said before when Anton sits down with me if I'm on the floor whether kneeling or whatever he always cocks one leg over and sit's down on my lap.
Well some months ago I went to my friends who also has Spanish an my other friends with their SWD's were also there. Anton did his usual cocked his leg over me, sat down and then all of a sudden I had a warm feeling all down my leg, yep he'd weed on me :d He's never done this before and never since, how humiliating, but I still loved him :d

Bailey also does it at the vet! He has tried at the groomers aswell. He was castrated last year but still does it. The only relief is that I normally don't take him when visiting (don't get out much so I tell o h) and when the in-laws visit with theirs they do it in mine thank god for laminate floors. For a while Bailey never even went upstairs as he was frightened of the stairs when he got over that he peed in every room but hasn't since. Anyway I still love him and he's a lot cleaner than the kids ( and doesn't talk back either) should have stuck to dogs!!!
