Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Evening Primrose for coats

Hi,

Some women at my puppy class have suggested i could use some Evening Primrose oil on my Cockers food.  He is black and sometimes i notice he has a slight dandruff look, he is 15 weeks old btw and is fed on JWB with some fresh chicken thrown now and then.  They never told me how much E> P Oil to use and i am now wondering if it would be 250mg , 500mg or 1000mg (although i would imagine the smaller dose would be best - if any at all!).  I am a bit sceptical and would like some opinions before i commit to using it

Many thanks :o)

I tried this a couple of years ago on one of my gsd's.  He ended up with a skin complaint!!  My friend swears by it though.

We give it to our girls, but because it's ment to be good for "women", it also gives them nice coats and skin, have never had a problem.

Have a look on dorwest.com
they have EPO in dosages for dogs. You can give human ones but might be best to start off on ones specifically for dogs till you are used to the doses.
One of mine is on 2 of theirs daily until I can get her skin balanced out then she will be on one a day, maintenence. Perhaps she just may need a bit more oil in her diet, like veg. oil but don't go mad on this to start with or you'll have the runs ;)
Hope this helps

You could also try fish oil capsules and vitE,or trying adding tinned sardines or mackarel etc. in oil or tomato sauce to your dogs meal a couple times per week, this does wonders for dodgy skin and coat and you dont have to worry about dosages :)

I've given EPO in the past(500mg for small dogs) and i didnt really see a difference,BUT there was nothing wrong with my dogs coat to start with,so you may have different results??

hi daisy, my gsd had the same skin problem as your dog, i put him on evening primrose oil capsules (which i get from vet aprox 4.00 for 90) the dosage is 1 pill per 10kg it works a treat for my lad flaky skin gone and lovely shine to his coat but it does take a couple of weeks to see difference. hope this is helpful

Thanks for all the helpful replies, i feel much better now and i will definately try the fish once or twice a week as it will be a nice change for him from JWB and fresh  chicken ....
