I have recently started to advertise my bull terrier for stud. So far no luck! Is there any other way I could go about studding my dog?

Is your dog KC registered, has he won in the show ring, have you had all the breed-specific heath tests done? Owners of good bitches have a choice of all the top studs in the country. Stud owners rarely need to advertise as such, as their dogs have proved themselves in the show ring and by their progeny. Unless your dog is an outstanding representative of his breed I am afraid that you will not get any requests for him to service good bitches. If your dog was purchased as a pet you should read the first topic in the breeding forum.

The only kind of advertising that counts to owners of good bitches is his record as a show winner or producer of top class puppies.  Stud dog owners will advertise theri dogs pedigree in canine publications and breed journals so as to bring it to the attention of the owners of prospective mates, as a way to remind them of his bloodlines.

No breeder worth of the name will use an unseen, unknown dog no matter how good.

So you will need to prove that he is god, and get him seen at the shows where the bitch owners will be looking at prospective husbands for their bitches.

Please please do not accept bitches to your dog from those  people responding to an anonymous advert.  they are very unlikleu to be the kind of careing responsible breeders with the welfare of the breed and theri puppies at heart.  Could yu really live with yourself knowing that your boys pups may be sold to just anyone with the Cash, or likley through a dealer?

There is also the fact that you are morally responsible for those pups as much as the bitch owner.  Would you be willing months or years later to take into your home for rehabilitation and rehoming a possibly untrained unruly offspring?

Unless you know the breed well you will not know which bitches will suit your male and which should be refused.  Obvously no0one knows this at the start, but after proving your dogs worth it woud be a good idea to work with someone in the breed who can guide you in this respect.

Breeding and having stud dogs carries huge responsibilities, as a breed is shaped by those breeding it, and can very quickly be ruined.

As well as the advice in the post mentioned on this board, if you go the Kennel club Website  you will find inofrmation guides here:
http://www.the-kennel-club.org.uk/kennelclub/Information%20Guides.html

One of which covers using your dog at stud.
