I want to get my Jack Russell a Pet Passport, I know she has to be chipped and fully vacinated which she is but I don't know what to do next, are there forms that need to be filled in - where do you get them from? Any advice would be great.
Your vet should be able to help you with that.
Have a look at the
DEFRA site - that should give you all the information you need, in addition to your vet ofcourse! :)

Just had our Staff done as she is coming to France with us this year. First they chip the dog then vaccinate for Rabies. After 30 days you go back and they send a blood sample off for testing. This then comes back to say that the vaccination has 'taken', this can take a few weeks. They then issue the passport. Expect to pay over £100 though
Does the 100 Pound bill include the vaccination and blood test ?
I'll be taking a pup from UK to Holland and of course need a passport.
The breeder will take care of this for me before transport since I'll only be in the UK for a few hours
but I will of course pay for the passport.
Haven't heard what the costs are yet (just the passport and chip, he's only 8 week when transported so no Rabies vaccination)
and would like to be prepared
Next time I promise my parents a pup I better start saving up 2 years ahead of time :D
here is what we were charged
chip 24.98
vacc 31.00
blood test 55.23
pet passp 8.41
119.62 in total
Don't forget that after the blood test there is a 6 month wait until the dog can be brought back into this country again (although it can be taken out), so if you are planning on going somewhere this yeatr it would be a good idea to get the ball rolling now.
Thanks for the info!
About the same prices as here in Holland.
the six month wait doesnt start until after the results have come back, you have to be very careful with the dates because as I have said the results of the blood test can take a month or two to come back.
I will only be taking the pup out of the country.
We're not planning on bringing him back :)
Counting the days right now untill we will be able to pick him up.
sorry I didnt realise, I remember when we were waiting to pick up Giorgia, we were so excited. Good luck with your new Baby I hope he brings you as much joy as ours has
No problem :)
Thanks for your information. Any info is always welcome.
We are very excited about the puppy. Wish I could fast forward the days :)
hi
you don't need a passport to go out of the uk - only to come back in...
My vet charged less than £50, though my girl already had a chip.
My friends vet insisted that the blood test was £75 and only two places in the UK were licenced to do it, my vet charged me £35 for the blood test.
Hi Sharon,
The rules have changed since July 2004.
You need a EU passport to travel now (instead of just a health certificate as before)
Even to travel from the UK to The Netherlands. The airlines also demand this.
And the pup has to be chipped or tattooed and vaccinated for rabies if he/she is over 3 months old
If younger both vet and breeder have to state that there has been no contact between the pup and wild
animals.
But thanks for responding
Ok i'll check that out thanks, but it can't be the same passport (with the same rules) as you wouldn't be able to leave for the netherlands until your pup was 10 months as the passport is not valid until 6 months after the blood test, so i think this may be a different document???
Sharon
You need the passport in every case.
But rabies shots are not needed for pups younger than 12 weeks (3 months)
The 6 months rule is only applicable on re-entering the UK.
Other exceptions are valid while transporting animals from countries outside the EU, coutries with special rules (Sweden, Ireland, Malte and a few more or countries that are not rabies free.
On URL's below you will find more info about the EU passport and rules concerning bloodtests :
http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/PETS/eucountries.htm
http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/PETS/Procedures/Support-info/blood.htm
there is only one pet passport system in place for EU apart from the exceptions as have been stated.
also to come back in you need the dog to have been treated and certificated by a vet within 24hrs of leaving the country for GB, for fleas and ticks. We're going on the Eurtunnel to France and they want to see the passport on dept from Folkestone not just on the home journey
