Hiya,
Have recently discovered this forum after searching the net for somewhere to get some advice on my babies!
I have 2 Husky brothers, George and Vinny who are now around 7 months old. Which have all of a sudden gone mad for chewing! (no great surprise I guess!)
Now, I was a very sensible person, as I had never owned a husky before, and I done my research etc. of what owning a husky would entail.
Now, they have complete (and have always made sure) they have routine in their lives - they are fed 6.30 every morning, (even recognise what alarm is mine or my other halves!) they are then walked (on the lead!), they have then always been told 'Mummy is going to work' ! and get a biscuit each before I go.
Whilst I am out, they have always been allowed in the main of the garden (6ft fenced all the way round !) also, on the side of this, they have their own garden - childrens playhouse as their kennel and a bricked sandpit for them to dig, tree branches etc. for them to chew and plenty of toys.
I also, allow them to be able to get in and out of the kitchen, apart from the cupboards there isnt anything in there and there is a baby gate between the kitchen door and the hallway, which they have never attempted to jump over whilst I have been out.
When I get home, they are then walked, fed then they are allowed in the lounge and they have a bed in there, so they know thats where they sit unless invited up.
Now, up until now the only thing that has been hard to stop is George having a fetish for socks! - doesnt chew them, he just swallows them whole, then brings them back up in his hole in the garden! (strange I know!) - at the moment, I have a serious problem with the chewing as Friday I come home to find half of the cupboard doors under the sink missing!!
I've sprayed this the doggy stuff that is suppose to prevent them chewing, and have to say they both were quite disgusted with the flavour when they tried! but they both seem to now just pick anything up and chew it at the first opportunity!
Is it just cause they are puppies or being huskys are they more bored?? just wondering if they need more activities in the garden and such like to keep them occupied??
Any help gratefully appreciated!
xx

And it should have wire mesh over the run. Huskies are remowned escapoligist and will climb or dog their way to freedom, and once free seem to have no sense of direction and just keep going.
This is the age that pups start to be most destructive if unsupervised. My freinds dobermans each remodelled her5 kitchen at about 9 months of age. they just had to accept that they did this as they were unable to supervise them for parts of the day, and were not prepared to confine them for long periods. This is one reason pups are not a good idea for people who work full time, as it can set back training and leace you with a lot of damage to your surroundings. The only way to stop a natural thing like chewing is to supewrvise and redirect theri need to chew to appropritate objects.

Siberians have a reputation for mayhem and destruction. The only way to counteract it is to make your home and garden as huskyproof as possible - even then your dogs will find the loophole in your defences. We once had a bitch who, stymied by reinforced doors, dog-proof locks etc, simply ate her way through a plaster wall! She could also jump easily over an 8' fence.
I would lock them out in their run while you are not in the house - that way, at least they aren't destroying your kitchen. I would also heed the suggestion about wiring over the top of the run. As Archer says, having two the same age is not always the best move. They "might" be company for each other and keep each other occupied and out of trouble, or, they might form an unholy alliance and work together - a nightmare scenario.
The thing is, not all huskies are destructive. We have four living with us at present and only one of them is in any way "chewy" - the others can be left indoors on their own with no problem. The new girl, who we recently imported from France is still in destructo puppy mode, so she has to be watched carefully (this morning I found her eating my wallet, which she had stolen from the dining room table when I wasn't looking!!!).
Hopefully, your two will calm down as they get older.
I would suggest that you be very careful about the socks however. Because they tend to swallow them whole, it is not unknown for the sock to get entangled within their intestines, cause a serious blockage and lead to serious illness, if not death. A friend of ours was devastated when one of her huskies died suddenly from a "mystery illness." The autopsy showed that he had eaten a towel while he was at the groomers being prepared for a show and the resulting intestinal blockage killed him.
Good Luck
