On the 27th of jan i bought an akita puppy from a private ad in the newspaper for £360. There where a litter of five, two dogs were left at 14wks old ,but they still had'nt had there jabs. Red was the puppy i picked,he came up to me straight away,as his brother was quiet and being sick, i didnt think much of it at the time, first time id bought a puppy. Collected the nessary K.C paper work and went on our merry way. Red was sick in the car ,as you would expect, doing 30 miles to get home. Contacted the vets to get the nessary jabs done, next morning at 10am . He was quiet when we got in drinking alot, but looked ok, playing a little, i just put it down to new surroundings . Later on  he started to sick ,every hour ,just water at that point i wasnt to concerend he just slept. i went to bed checking on him in the middle of the night, cleened up filled his water and went back to bed. In the morning he was so deprested, got him to the vets and explaned what was happening imedetley the vet took him in and put him on a drip, still quite not knowing what was wrong. Red had to be put to sleep two days later with suspected pavo.its still not comfirmed im waiting for the results. Im still looking foward to having an akita puppy, how do i make sure this doesnt happen again

Sorry to hear what happened. Horrible way to learn a valuable lesson.

To prevent this happening again, go to a reputable breeder, via a Breed Club, or by recommendation.

It is the easiest thing in the world for anyone to put a dog and a bitch together and get a litter of puppies, it does not mean that those people are have the knowledge or are capable of rearing a healthy litter.  Unfortunately the majority of these people have to resort to advertising in local papers, which is why I would always advise against buying via that sort of advert.

hi,
sorry to hear your sad news,if you are still wanting to buy another puppy you may have to wait a while as you have had a puppy on your property with parvo, and any other puppy you bring home will be then at risk of parvo, have a word with your vet he will be able to advise you,if you do go ahead and buy another puppy, please take note of all the pups in the litter not just the one you decide to take home,i dont mean to be critical, but if i had gone to view this litter and saw one of the pups being sick i would of walked straight away,as we all know you have learnt a valuble lesson, try not to let your heart rule your head.

Very good point angel.  I have a feeling that it is a good while before a parvo virus dies.  I would certainly get a very good parvocide from your vet and use that in all the areas that the poorly puppy went in and on to.

Sorry to hear about your puppy, from what the vets told me going back 15yrs ago when we had a similar problem parvo virus lives in the house and clothes for up to 2 yrs we could not bring another dog into the house unless it was fully vaccinated but like I said it was 15 yrs ago and things might of changed by now, We also have an Akita which we bought from a reputable breeder 2 yrs ago we also were travelling from Teesside to south Wales and back so I asked the breeder to give him his 1st vaccination 1 week before collecting him and to book me an appointment with a vet in their area which they had no problem with, we took him to a vets with the breeder and got him checked out before we headed back, the breeder was only to happy to help, Any good breeder should be happy to assist you with your requests to ensure the safety of their puppies. Please become a member and send me a PM i will give you some good breeder details but have a word with your vet first about the parvo

So sorry to hear about your Akita puppy. I would check with your vet about precautions & if it was Parvo, go for slightly older puppy who has had all his innoculations - any reputable breeder will hold onto a pup for you in your circumstances.  Have to say £360 seems very cheap for a well bred puppy these days. We paid £350 for our boy 7 yrs ago and that was very reasonable - we could have paid a lot more. Hope you got your money back from the breeder - I know that doesn't help your puppy, but you shouldn't have to suffer financially as well as emotionally. Like Nettie, I'll be happy to point you in the right direction. Please Register (it's free) & we'll help all we can.

We also have an Akita and have found within the london area so many are breeding for cash.
our first one cost £800 from a very well known breeder and she turned out to have double entropien. sorry spelling is not my strong point.
Another kennel knew what we had been through with the first one and gave us a girl free of charge. so beware not all that glitters is gold.

I think it is 6 months now that you can not have a dog in the house.  I hope you contacted the breeder.

Even with the best will and care in the world a pup from an excellent breeder can develop problems, like Entropian.  The measure of teh breeder is what they do about it.  They should not mate the parents to each other again, and take especial care when using either with other partners checking even more into their background to see if this problem has occured in those lines before.  If it were me I would also have offered either to ahve the pup backor given a partial refund.

Entropian can usually be sorted out with an operation and the dog will then continue to be first class companion. :D

Entropian in itself is not a hereditary conditon, rather the conformation that predisposes to it is inherited, so any dog with deep set eyes and a lot of facial mass (not dry tight sklin like you get with dome breeds) can be affected.  with some it is a temporary condition until a pup grows into it's face( have heard this happens with a hnumber of spaniel breeds) and the ver will tack the eyelidsuntil the pup is older.  Most Vets will not operate on the lids until the pups head has grown, because doing so might mean they over compensate.

It is an unfortunate fact that we cannot control nature, all we can do is study our breed and lines and health test to try and minimise the chances of producing pups with problems.  At least good breeders try to do this, the poor ones don't care what they produce.
