Topic Dog Boards / General / Caravanning with Dog!

Have just taken the plunge and put a deposit down on a touring caravan. We are totally new to this, but wanted to have holidays with kids and dog!
Any advice that people who go caravanning with their dog would be most appreciated (you know - all those little things you learn over the years)
Looking forward to lots of tips!

Hi Anne
We had a folding camper & upgraded to a touring caravan Jan last year, its the best thing we ever did! With children & a dog its the ideal thing. We took our dog on his first holiday when he was 18weeks old.
We joined The Caravan Club, they have lists of sites which welcome children & dogs!
Most beaches we have been on have a seperate section for dog owners.
We bought a "screw in ground stay" for Murphy & 10ft lead attachment, so when we were o/s the caravan he could stay with us without wandering off. Also lots of old towels for muddy feet come in very handy.
I am also going to invest in a dog crate, if anyone could advice me on a metal/plastic base I would be very grateful.
Happy caravanning!

We go camping with ours and also stake them out when they are outside (when they are not on leads). I use a two foot steel stake for mine, as the screw in ones you can buy would have no chance at holding them.

I'd agree with joing the caravanning club, its useful to have a list of dog friendly sites :)

I'm sure you'll have a great time.

Have a look at www.doghealth.co.uk for crates/cages.

A good awning for the dogs ;-)

Highly recommended.  We go camping as opposed to caravanning and love every minute of it.  We have found a brilliant site called Hedleywood near Bude in North Devon.  Really nice people, great beaches near by, couldnt ask for more.

We too use a screw in stake but they have one each.  We also have a gazebo that we put up so they can get out of the sun easily if they need to.

And the good thing about the Caravan Club sites is they dont charge extra for your dog.

we camp a lot at agility shows, and loads of peolpe including ourselves make a 'garden' around the tent. we use the orange barrier fencing, which can be bought at a builders merchant, and put through electric fence stakes, sometimes if there is a weakspot in the barrier, we use windbreaks too, most caravan site would probably be ok with it if it keeps you dog in the area!

happy camping!
