Hi all.
I would like to breed my Boxer but am afraid she will pass her allergy on to her puppies.
As a youngster she would not stop scratching so after endless tests at the vets they told me she had an allergy towards wool and grass of all things.
After 2 years of vaccine I finally took a friends advice (a friend with years of expierience with boxers) and told the vet I wanted my boxer on steroids. This has stopped the scratching.
If she were to have puppies would this allergy be passed down to the puppies or is this not a hereditary condition?
If there is any chance this will be passed on, breeding her is out the window as I would not want to pass this problem on to anyone else.
Thanks.

I would think her sensitivity could definitely be passed on. Also, is she still on steroids? If so, I would think you would have to stop them for some time before the mating, during the pregnancy and while she is nursing the pups. Presumably her allergy would then flare up again and she would be a very miserable bitch.
Why take the chance of so many problems when it is not necessary. The last thing you want is for the puppies to go through what she has, and for the owners constantly to be ringing you up to complain if they start having the same problems as your girl. If it were me, I would not take the risk, I would just have her speyed. She won't care whether she has pups or not, they don't get the mothering instincts until just before they produce the pups.
Thanks.
She is booked in for march to be spayed!
The only reason for breeding her was so we could take on one of her pups ourselves! But I guess now we will look at taking a new pup for a different line. (Would have loved to have seen her pups! She's the most placid Boxer I have ever seen, hopfully she would have passed this on to her pups.........but now we'll never see)
Thanks for your thoughts!

Hi boxer owner just enjoy your girl as a pet and like you said buy another from a reputable breeder perhaps you could join your local boxer breed club then once your new pup would be old enough have a go at showing him/her and talk to people within the breed club refarding breeding. good luck

Well you could still ahve a relative, if her breeder kept a brother or sister that are being bred from, or her parenst may have had other pups. If you contact the breed club and give the secretary the names of her parents and maybe grenparents they may know who is breeding with those lines.
My freind has three Elkhounds each is the nephew of the one before, so she has a continuation of a family line without having bred herself.
