Topic Dog Boards / General / Makes me so mad

Hi,

I normally walk Gonzo around 6.30 am, after I finish work. Guaranteed every Friday, Sat, Sun and Mon mornings whilst walking I have to carry him over broken bottles and glasses everywhere. Its not like a few bits of glass here and there, its all over the pavement and roads. Its ok if you can spot it when it reflects in the light, but some of the places arent well lit, and I have my eyes to the ground looking just incase.

Its a good job he's a Patterdale and I can carry him, and I only have one dog. I feel sorry for anyone else who have bigger dogs, or a number of them. Its still dark obviously at 6.30am, so I dont go upto the park as there is no lighting whatsover. So I have to walk the streets. Its not  just sectioned outside pubs, people walk home with their drinks then throw the glasses/bottles away, so you're never away from it all.

Altrinchams got signs up about no drinking on the streets, and taking drinks out the pub, obviously these are working  Some of the pieces obviously are bigger than others (if you've ever smashed a glass) he could do alot of damage on these, as could other dogs.

Do people think that I have within my rights to complain to the council about this, as it is a real bug bare of mine. I would also be interested to know if anyone has ever complained about the likes of this to the council before, what department you went to, and what was the outcome.

Kind Regards

Ben

Hey Gonzo you live just down the road from me :d  Let's face it there seems a lot more glass around etc. than there is dog mess.  It really annoys me too.  We get called if our dogs litter, although I do clean up after mine, although some people stilll moan.  Can't help you with where to go but someone will.

Hi Gonzo.  complain - you can even do it online. You could also try writing to your local paper - it would make a change from the dog dirt parade anyway!

Definitely complain. We did about glass and the midnight-dog-walk-with-no-poop-scoop brigade. Now we are patrolled by the neighbourhood warden (who is just a little bit scary!) and it does seem to be making a difference.

I have the same problem as you.  The city centre is always kept immaculate including constantly resurfacing things that dont need it.

In my area just outside the centre because the tourists don't see it it's disgusting.

I have to walk murph in the middle of the road sometimes because of the glass which also undermines training as i don't want him to walk on the road unless we're crossing it.

Defin complain, if it were kids you would get a quick reply so why not dogs!

Thanks for the replies. Just sent message online (god bless the internet) :)

Ill see what response I get from this, then go to the local paper.

Im not letting this drop, im like a dog with a bone ;)

Gonzo, a good question the the public is....Would you rather fall in glass, break the skin, get glass under the skin, have an operation to get glass out, risk loosing alot of blood or fall in dog poo and wash it off when you get home?

We have exactly the same problem here in Northampton, especially in the underpasses. I have wondered if glass bottles couldn't be banned....some people obviously take delight in deliberately smashing glass, without any regard to the consequences. It's so dangerous for the dogs, and of course for small children who might fall on to the glass.

Ice Queen, lol :D

Maybe I shall add that at a later date ;)

carene,

I thought that it would be a nationwide thing. Im glad im not the only one it annoys.

i would complain aswell try the enviromental health department of youre local council they should be able to help point you in the right direction it is so annoying these people seem to target dog fouling so broken glass is even more of a danger where i live in macclesfield not that far from altrincham there is always smashed glass on the pavements i have complained a few times and nothing much has been done but in the area where i live the community police are doing a pilot scheme that involes selected members of the community to walk round the area and tell them of issues in the area i have been selected to go on one of these walk rounds so i will be mentioning about the glass everywhere so we will see if this has any affect

Hi Saffie,

I hope you get somewhere with this then. If they're looking for people around here, let me know. :)

hi gonzo its just a pilot scheme in oure area at the moment but if it works well hopefully other areas will get the community action teams in and start inlisting local help
