Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / dog pulling causing arm pain!
- By Guest [gb] Date 29.01.05 16:01 UTC
Hello all! I have a 5stone dog who every day for the past three years has eagerly (to say the least) pulled me towards her fav. walk! Trouble is I now have a constant shooting pains in my "lease" arm! It's a bit like sciatica- but in my arm. She wears a halti but still manages to pull! Does anyone esle suffer with this "arm ache? I know I must be getting old but sometimes all the muscles in my upper back  feel sore. And---I thought dog-walking was meant to be healthy!!!

My 11 stone Bullmastiff used to pull like mad and I too had pains but more in my arm muscles and back. I changed him onto a halti, which did help a bit but I also used to carry treats and feed him them frequently until I got to the field. This did help as it kept him distracted from where he was going! I also hold the end of the lead in my right hand and a length of the lead in my left (he walked on my left) and this gave me extra power to hold him back. I also tried stopping and sitting him everytime he pulled but our walks could last for hours and I have to say could not commit to this way of training! Good luck! There is hope .... my boy is now 10 and only pulls a little !!!!

One tip I was given to save the arms and back, put lead behind you instead of in front ie. lead laying between bum and thighs.
