Topic Dog Boards / Health / audiclean for dogs?
- By ali-t [gb] Date 28.01.05 16:55 UTC
I was wondering if the ear cleaning treatment audiclean is suitable for dogs.  Its described as 'the safer alternative to cotton buds' and is made from purified sea water and is isotonic, sterile and preservative free.  My dog often has itchy ears and I clean any wax (I think it is wax) from the outside of her ear with cotton wool (NOT cotton buds!) but wondered if I would be able to use human ear cleaner.  I am reluctant to ask my vets as they seem to be against anything that they can't sell (e.g. RAW feeding) so am looking for some advice from any knowledgable champdoggers.

All I can say is yes, in my case any way ;)

I use Audiclean on my ears regularly and also my daughter. My boy has very long, hairy, sweaty, waxy ears that I do pluck, but he still gets the itches and the smell. I started using it last year on him and it has dramatically improved. No more itching and the ear canal is clean, pink and sweet smelling. It does say on the bottle "for babies from 6 months" if it is gentle enough to use on babies, then.........:)

Think of it this way, does your dog go in the sea? Mine does, and they get sea water in their ears, in my experience, it has never done any harm, apart from the shaking of very wet head and ears that is :P The sea is not very clean, but in most cases has no damaging effects, so sterile salt water can't be any worse.

thanks hairy pooch, I'm reluctant to go to vets and use antibiotics and things like that unless necessary but she does seem to have a bit of an itch in one ear just now so I'm thinking of getting that sorted and using audiclean as a maintenance measure after that to prevent any more nasties getting in - if she will tolerate getting water whooshed in her ear.

it will take some time cheekychow, but make sure that you warm it up first. I put my bottle in a jug of very warm water, test it on myself and then use it on monsterman :P he was a pain to start with but has calmed down since I have been doing it. I started doing it ever couple of days and then once a week and then down to once every 10 days. He's still a complete tart though and often thinks that I am trying to kill him :D ..........shame we can't explain to them, like we can to kids ;)

Oops, I did it before reading your last post hairypooch - end result distilled seawater all over me, me bed and everything within reach.  Good tip of warming up the bottle, wish I'd thought of that before aiming cold water in her lug.  I've used it myself before but because I knew what was happening, cold water wasn't too great a surprise for me but she didn't really like it.  she must think I hate her at the moment because she had her first bath in 12 months last night too so she's probably after revenge this morning and will roll in some smelly fox poo.  thanks for your advice hairypooch and I'll persist with it.
