Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / eating poo!
- By gem-jo [gb] Date 26.01.05 20:36 UTC
My 12 month lab bitch Cassy eats her poo, and I've even found her eating my older dogs poo also.  At puppy training we were told that dogs do this, and it's quite normal, although disgusting!
When I put them out after their food I watch and wait and grab it quick before she can eat it, but sometimes I miss it (think she watches and waits too!!) and find a few remnants waiting for me.

Is she lacking in nutrients, or maybe she's still hungry?...although I feel I give her plenty of food, she's always ravinous and begging for more.  Do Labs ever feel full up?

It really is a dirty habbit, and with the children around it isn't ideal.
What confuses me is that the older dog, Jasper, has never, to my knowledge eaten any poo.

How normal/common is this?

Thank you
jo

We used to have a gsd bitch that did the same,we were told it was a bitch thing and that she'd grow out of it which she did by the time she was 18 months old. Some people say they do it because they lack nutrients in their food,i don't know what the reasoning is but as you say its not nice, some also say they get it from their mum as they clean up after the pups when they're tiny and they're just copying that behaviour.I'm not much help really i just wanted you to know you're not alone, our bitch staffie also did it for a short time but not for long enough for it to be a concern and she was very young too.

Try doing a search on here called "copraphagia" and you will read some interesting posts on it.

Alas, I have a GSD bitch that still does this and having ruled out dietry and health problems, the only way we can control it is to be very vigilant and pick it up, she's not fussy as to who's poo she eats either. I agree with you, it's absolutely disgusting and my other dog has never done it, I have found in the past that the bitches that I have had are more likely to do it than dogs. Just my experience though :)

This is really disgusting, however Edward has started to do it.... however its the cats poo from the litter tray....He races to the tray when we get home from work and if I'm not quick enough..... oh ohhhhh.... he gets it.  Never touches his own though. Strange habit... not a nice habit.... but he's off to puppy school next Monday evening.... lets see what other puppy owners have to say there, and indeed the lady taking the class.  So glad I'm not on my own with my puppy and his habit! LOL

Mmm - mine absolutely lurve Ferraro Roche a la cats' litter tray   ugh!!!

Pineapple added to dog's food is supposed to make poo less palatable - but how do you get other dogs' owners to feed it when your dog eats other dogs' poo????

Edward is almost 14 weeks old and is a border terrier..... my four cats generate quite some waste.... think I'll start putting my trainers on so that I can beat him to the litter tray.

My friends with both cats and dogs have to keep the cats' litter tray where the dog can't get to it. There seems to be no way of curing them of this. :( The theory is that cat food is much higher in protein than dog food, and a lot of protein is undigested in the excrement ... yuck!

Yep my youngest does this as well.  15 months old.  Never eats his own always everyone elses and he will also roll in as well which is very pleasant.  Smelly fur and smelly dog breath even more than usual!

my litle dog started to eat his poo whilst ill with a tummy bug, as soon as things firmed up a little i spotted him eating it. yuk as far as i know he has not done this before in his 14 years. i gave him a little crushed pineapple in his food and also charchoal biscuits and it has seemed to do the trick. g ive it a go .
