We lost my Gran yesterday after a short illness.  She was 94, much loved and fairly active in her own little flat until just before Christmas when she went into hospital.  We have to clear her flat as soon as possible as the council obviously want it and put up the rent immediately, so mum (her only child) and me are going to do this this afternoon.  Not going to be easy so would be grateful for your thoughts.
Thanks and best wishes
Alex

Sorry for your loss :( clearing out her flat is going to be nostalgic for you. You will find things that will make you laugh and cry.

I cleared out my grandmothers house when she died, back in 1998 and I spent 2 weeks there, her house was like the old curiosity shop so it took that long. But I found things that I had forgotten about and also little momento's that I kept. I still get them out occasionally and indulge myself.

Good luck, it's not easy and alway sad, My Gran was 77 and everybody said , well at least she had a good innings. That's not the point, the point is, whenever anybody dies, however young or old, you will always miss them. My gran virtually brought me up.

Sorry to hear about your Gran :(

It is always a difficult when you loose somebody close.

It will be a difficult task clearing out the flat but at the same time you will find things that will put a smile on your face as it will bring back many good memories :)

So sorry to hear about your gran, Alex.
Although it's got to be done, clearing her home will probably be a bit difficult for you and your mum.  Obviously you won't be able to keep all the momentos but make sure you hang on to any old family documents/old photographs etc.  These kind of things are irreplaceable and may be a huge help if you ever get interested in family history stuff.

Best wishes.

Sorry about your grannie - I'm thinking of you & your mum having to go through everything so quickly - it's not easy, I know, but with you both there for each other, you will get through it.

Thank you so much for your thoughts.  We managed three hours which was enough for mum to start with and you're so right we have found so many reminders that we had forgotton about.  Although it is a small flat gran lived there for over forty years and every cupboard and drawer is stuffed full.  We are carrying on over the weekend and my brother is hopefully coming on Saturday to help if he can which will be lovely for mum.
Best wishes
Alex
