any one got any tips how to stop the local cats from pooing in my front garden,

You can get some stuff called keep off - it's in crystal form, not sure if it works. I have heard that orange peel is good too & I know a few people who have tried it & say it works. Put fresh peel (lots) around the area & see what happens.

Put you dogs in the garden !!!!

Sit at the front windows with a high-powered water pistol. (Recommended by the Cats' Protection League, before anyone starts ranting at me.)

Can just imagine gofaster sitting at the window & eating tonnes of oranges whilst waiting. :D

we planted loads of lavender in our front garden as we were advised by the garden centre that cats hate the smell of it, only to find next doors tom cat asleep in the middle of it the very next day!! - shows you what the garden centre staff knows doesnt it! :)

We have a tub outside our front door with a small shrub and now the bulbs are just coming up nicely around it some little creature has started to use it as a litter tray and its not doing the bulbs a power of good I cannot see the tub from the window so I have no idea when it is happening but I would certainly like to scoot some water into its............earhole!

They will protect their own teritory... end of problem.

Granted you probably dont want one but its a solution :)

Cats and gardens.

1. Borrow my dog and your garden will be cat free (even from your own cat!)

2. Get your own cat, they don't go in their own gardens and no one elses cat seems to either.

3. Put lots of small sticks (e.g. lolly sticks) in the ground and they can't get a comfy place to "squat" as they can't get their feet in.

4. Don't buy that plant that's supposed to repel them - it doesn't work.

5. My neighbour says a liquid solution of hot water, mustard and pepper sprayed on your garden deters them (don't know what it does to the plants though!).

They don't like garden hoses on them either :)

Jeangenie is spot on. Water pistol. They hate citrus so orange peel/lemon peel. They also hate foil. I think the best thing is JIF squeezy lemon....you can scent your garden/beds/shrubs etc and aim for the persistent caller.

Are they using a specific spot?  I would try putting bin liners down-they do hate any kind of rustling surface and especially if it's wet, a collection of water will put them off as they don't like their feet being wet. 

My cats couldnt care less if they were squirted with a water pistol they must be the only two cats that actually like water They just stand there and stare at you while you are doing it although i have had to stop loosing them out now as we recently moved near to a very busy road and would hate for anything to happen to them.

We had a cat yrs ago my mum used Ammonia in a little tub with holes in the top so the cat couldn't drink from it but placed it around the base of her plants, the cat never went near them, but don't know if the cat stayed away from them because of the ammonia or her ranting and raving lol :-)

You can borrow Abby as before we got her we had all the local cats in the garden every morning you would have to clean the patio as it was covered in mess I havent seen one cat in the garden since we got Abby now if only she could sort out the frogs.

I knew someone who shot a cat who was in his garden with an air rifle and blue tack! Needless to say, he wasn't a very nice man, but I do understand how annoying it is. We used to have a big problem with it, but in the end we sorted it by letting the dogs out every time we spotted them. There was no way the dogs could catch them, but in the end, the cats got so fed up with, it was less hassle to go elsewhere. Now they poo in their own gardens! 

thanks for all your replys  they are doing it in my front garden which is not fenced in so the dogs cant run around in there. I got no problem in the back because of the dogs. keep your helpful hints coming and dont worry I wont be shooting them...

someone puts washing up liquid on my cats backs but i couldnt tell you if they go back in to the gardens,i think water is o.k my cats are 8 luckly they havent died from the washing up liquid it must taste foul,my cats dont go to the loo in my garden as they never mess in there own garden so i have all the neighbours cats in mine but not many as mine chase them away,you can buy garlic granuals from pet stores to sprinkle on the area rebecca

Not sure, I've tried everything and nothing stops MY cat from pooing all over my lawn, my other 2 go else-where, but George will insist on going in our garden, dogs or no dogs and he makes the lawn worse than the dogs as once he has finished he claws all the grass up to cover it up.

OH had a go the other day as he likes to put his Harris out on the lawn and there wasn't any room for her what with all the cat poo around !!!

I have two house cats who use litter trays but other cats use our garden.

I just scoop theirs up along with our dog's.

Its frustrating for you but I think you'll probably just have to clear it up regularly

go to the nearest zoo and buy some tiger poo, the cats doing the deed will think you have a resident tiger.....

just a suggestion!!

cat repelent MIGHT work or use sprinklers(cats hate water).Isn't this a DOG site.

Crushed up moth balls scattered around the garden will do the trick :D...........can still buy them in the chemist.

1. Get your own cat.  It does work we have two and dont have a problem anymore.

2. Put large pebbles in pots or on bedding as they cant dig down (dont try and put small gravel as they will use it even more as a litter tray). The added advantage being this keeps the weeds down as well.

i have 3 cats of my own, and never get anyone elses cats in my garden.

lol whoever mentioned foil - that doesn't work - my cat would just nick it - he is obsessed with tin foil, or foil sweet wrappers anything that makes that sound. If i need to find him I just scrunch up foil and he's at my feet.

I know it's frustrating, luckily all my cats go in my garden, I don't get any other cats in there cos of the dogs.

My cats use an old butler sink that I used to grow herbs in, the cats pulled them up and now use it, I just clean it out like i would the litter.

Would spiky, prickly plants work maybe????? Or the big stones/pebbles, I did still have a problem in my front garden, now I have plants with big cobbles around them and I don't have the problem anymore.

My sister puts plastic bottles of water in her fresh dug garden. she said it works.

You have to frighten them rigid.  A water pistol filled with orange squash works - they hate the stickiness.  I normally creep up on them and then run at them waving my arms - they are too terrified to return - mind you so is the window cleaner. 

Someone in our area has just acquired (or they have just moved in) a white cat :( It seems to live in the field next to our house - or, what is even worse, our garden. Because it is white, the dogs can see it so quickly and I have nearly been pulled over several times when they see it :D

If I can get there quickly enough, I'll pour a tin of black paint over it and then the dogs won't see it so plainly :D :D (I am joking :D )

Well getting your own cat is certainly not a guarantee of success...I've got 2, and they both use the garden everyday as their toilet, plus we still get other cats in the garden too.

My cats are also very territorial and are constantly in scraps with the invading cats, but it doesn't seem to make the blindest bit of difference!

In addition to our "house" cats, we acquired the "Feral Free" aka the Toilet Two + Lonesome (see if you can find the thread on Catsenders early Autumn/winter 2003).    These three have taken to "dancing" on top of the kennels at unearthly early hours of the morning - around about 4am

This starts off whoever is kennelled barking - we check it out (after all, we might have intruders!) - and have found nothing.   After about 2 weeks of this happening at the same time every night, we set up a rather old CCTV - and found - the Feral Free, all dancing across the roofs - once they had woken the dogs up, they just disappeared into the night!!

I would add that they aren't looking for shelter - they have squatters rights in the summerhouse.

Put cut up pieces of Holly on the places you don't want the cats to go!  Works for Dogs too!

I also heard that if its on the soil to put chicken wire just underneath the soil so you can't see it but when the cat goes to scrape they can't. In-laws do it and seems to work!
