Topic Dog Boards / General / How to toilet train 2 puppies

HI

We have got 2 new pups. A labrador and a CKCS, both are 7 weeks old and are not my first dogs. I cam by the lab by 'accident' :) and am now wandering how to train them as obviously they need to relieve themselves at different times.
I am spending individual time with them and they are both getting know there names - Lab is rosie and CKCS is bosley. we have individual play time and all seems fine with them bonding to me.
I feed them together at the moment which has proved to be fine but when i take them out to toilet one will go but the other won't. i can stay out for ages but getting them both to perform is proving difficult. I suppose my question is do i toilet train them seperately or together?

Thanks

Hi Animad - you've got your work cut out ;)

I'd be inclined to try and train them separately - it means more work for you initially but should also mean they pick up on what you want more quickly so saves in the long run.  At the moment they will be distracting one another and also as you say getting them both to perform within a reasonable time will be difficult.

If done separately you will have more chance to instill a command word for their toilet too that they will actually learn - if in the garden together and doing their biz separately they will be confused by the other's command.

With patience it should work in the end but it may also be an idea to try feeding them individually too so they don't always need to relieve themselves at the same time

HTH,
Regards, Teri :)

Hi Animad, Ouch, do you know what you have let yourself in for :D  I am on my third lot of 2 pups same age, including 3 under 6 months.   They are all trained together and then individually.  Toilet training - take both pups out at the same time, as soon as the 1st one does the business, praise immediately and seperate, stay with the other until he/she does the same. They will take a little time as playtime will take precedence, but at this age their bladders will take over. :D  Taking them out seperately means you dont know which one needs to go and while you are out, the other one widdles indoors where you have no control.  Feed you pups together but from different bowls. Stand over them to make sure no pilfering from each others bowls.  This will also teach them not to guard their food. At 7 weeks I would take them out for widdles every half hour or so and immediately after each feed. Loads and loads of praise each time they do what you want. Good luck

When we briefly had Mia we found that Murph didn't poo when she was around.

He is trained to go on command and would wee if he was desperate . We had to put mia back in the house first and in that time Murph would do his business.

Thanks for the replies

They are both sleeping now so i will take them both out when they wake and then try the seperate training from then on. I am at homw full time and can give them the attention - just hope the weather picks up :) I already have a pair of shoes and a rain coat, gloves and hat by the door ready- only problem is pups usually have been an gone by the time i have put them on!! :)

With two at seven weeks I don't think I'd even bother taking them off :D :D :D

Teri, I live in boots for 3 months when I have young pups :D even sleeping with them on. Regarding my soon to be new addition,  I have just worked out that I will be outside with her roughly 20 times in any 24hr period  thats about 10 hours, I didn't realise how much spare time I had just sitting in the warm, watching TV, posting on CD and walking my 2 a total of 21/2 hrs a day, 2 for the boy and 1/2 for my girl. I've still got to add that on to my 10 hrs

I may be gone from this forum for some time :P
