Topic Dog Boards / Health / Flatcoated Retriever Cyst not Sty
- By Sharon-Marie [gb] Date 05.01.05 17:06 UTC
Re: last message on sty in flatcoats eye.

Just back from the vets as it hadn't gone down as we'd hoped. She says it is a pimobium/mipobium  cyst or something like that. The vet said it's very common but needs cutting out under anaesthetic as it's touching her eye, so we're taking Livvy on Friday to have it done. I asked if it could be cancerous and the vet said it was highly unlikely but we could get it tested if we want. We lost out last flatcoated retriever at 4 years old to liver cancer- it was a total shock. Now i'm very worried when anything is wrong- especially as Livvy has just turned 4.
Has anyone else had a cyst in their dog like this?
Thanks
Sharon

Anna has one about a quarter of an inch away from her eye. I had a chat to the vet last time I was there, nearly a year ago and at that time his thoughts were to leave alone till it got a bit bigger or till there was other work to be done whichever came first. As it stands at the moment it has grown a little and I'm of a mind to get it sorted after the shooting season finishes. Were it closer to the eye then it does really need attending to or it could rub on the eye and cause damage.

Hi John. This one is actually touching her eye. Is Anna a flatcoated Retriever?

No Sharon, she's one of those horrid yellow things ;)

Seriously, In that case I would get it seen to. Flatcoats do have a problem with some anaesthetics but your vet should know that. The op is simple, just a nick to let the cyst out and a stitch to hold it together till it heals.

Which anaesthetics do they have problems with and in what way?
Thanks

Most of the modern anesthetics are fine, but it is always worth mentioning to the vet. My elderly flatcoat had a sort of warty thing on her eye lid, it was very close to the eye, I left it alone, then one day Sally removed it herself, by rubbing her eye on a mesh door I have! It never came back. Don't worry too much about this, the vet will advise you for the best.

Just to say thanks for those who replied.
Livvy had the "thing" removed which turned out to be a growth, but thankfully benign.
Thanks again

Glad it's all over Sharon. It's a load off your mind now it's gone. As soon as the shooting season finishes next week I intend to get Anna's attended to.
