I have just aquired the above dog who is 6mths old born Jun 04 by Wamirembe Bemvaba at Mandanna ex Ellie of Elkesley. Does anyone have an older sibling, if so what are they like? Simba is lovely, but I have found him very talkative for a Ridgeback, especially when driving, (ok when parked up). We have tried giving treats when he is quiet, & he is getting better bless him. Also any tips on how to stop him jumping up, tried turning back on him, bringing knee up, & telling him down. Problem is if he gets too excited he starts mouthing & pulling at clothing. He was never allowed off the lead, but we have found him to be perfect (at the moment), though I have put this down to everything still being new. He is a loving dog, would love to know what his brothers & sisters are like though.
Many thanks
Sue
Sue, You may have to put up with the jumping up when excited for some time but if you have great persistance and a lot of time you could try to teach 'sit' when greeting people or as a cool off in the run up to moments of overexcitement. IMO mouthing in Ridgebacks is a modern 'breeding-for-conformation-only' fault (a similar fault is whining in show-GSPs) where no consideration is given to the practical utility of the bloodline ; it is too common in the breed these days. We've had them for 40 years. Good luck.
