Topic Dog Boards / General / what do you feed your staff on?
- By staffystella [in] Date 20.01.05 20:43 UTC
i have a six month old staff and i want her to be really bulky. just wondering what you feed yours on?
- By archer [gb] Date 20.01.05 20:49 UTC
Size is genetic...if she is meant to be 'bulky' ,with proper feeding she will be.If not the only way she will look bulky is if she is fat!
If you wanted a specific type of staff you should have done your homework....what are her parents like?
Feed her a good quality food in the right quantities and exercise her carefully and she will grow to the adult she is meant to be...whatever that is

If her parents were 'bulky' then she will be eventually ...you didn't say she wasn't eating properly in your post ...YOU SAID you wanted to feed her to make her bulky!!!!!!

Why do you want her to be bulky ?

Just interested as are you going to be showing her, as in it is a requirement of the breed standard ? ( I know nothing about staffies so a question as a novice ! )

I've found pups are often fussy eaters at this age, because they're still teething. They also go through a leggy adolescent stage, but put muscular bulk on when their skeleton's finished growing. Just feed her good quality food (which I'm sure you are already) and if she's genetically programmed to be bulky she'll get her finished look at the right time.

I have two Staffs one 7mths and one 8 mths ...they are actually cousins but one is very tall and Lean and the other is short and stocky, they are both fed burns with abit of Chicken, Tuna and egg occasionally mixed in.

As I've learnt from the adivce I have been given by CD poster is that you can't feed your dog to be a cetain size...they are either one type or another.

Be patient. Her size is determined by genetics. It is not possible to artificially influence this unless a) you overfeed & make her fat; b) you underfeed and make her skinny. At 6 months just feed as normal and, when she is older and her growth plates & skeleton have finished growing, you can then start to condition her if you so wish. Pushing development at your pup's age can cause irremediable damage

if you try and make your Staff bulky and she is not genetically disposed to it, it could make her unwell. When you say fussy do yuo mean she eats ok one day and not so good the next or have you been trying lots of different food because you cant find one she likes.

Ours is 10month old and she is going to be tall like her Dad, we saw her mother and we have photos of Dad and she appears to be going his way.
We feeds ours  mainly a diet of natural food with some dried added, the dried being recommended by the breeder who has used it for 14 years with all her dogs. What do you feed yours on specifically and how many times a day at the moment?

Hi At 6 months or so staffs have a tendency to be fussy eaters don't panic - they do turn out alright in the end but don't pander to them. ie they are not stupid dogs and if they turn ther nose up at their normal food and you replace it with chicken then you'll be making a rod for your own back.

But as Archer said what you pup eventually looks like will be determind by her parents, as long as you feed good quality food then you will be on a winner. And picky is second nature to staffie pups that age don't worry. As long as she does not end up fat you';ll be fine - and fat is sometimes mistaken for bulk in some staffs as you know as you've done your homework. But I myself prefer leaner lines.
