Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / New Pup out for first walks

Hi there

What would you recommend is the ideal time I should take my westie pup out for her walk??

She is 13 weeks old and she has just started going out for her walks for a week now...I have been taking her for about 20mins walk everyday in the week and at weekends, we go to parks or woods where she probably gets about 40 mins excersise...Is this too much??

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

Suzie

The normal rule of thumb is 5 mins per month of age - it's particularly important when dealing with larger breeds, but it's still very easy to tire out a small puppy, which can result in grumpy behaviour at home :(

That's the same rule of thumb I was given. but wasn't sure if this varied depending on the size of dog?

My Mum and Dad asked about this at their training classes (their labrador puppy Misty is 14 weeks). The class leader said not more than half an hour per day.

No idea whether this relates to size of dog or not.

A Westie puppy of this age will get all the exercise it needs running about and playing with you in the house and garden :)  walking about outside should be more about socialisation and training ;) this can be accomplished by playing in the park and short walks broken up by sitting and watching/meeting people, traffic, other dogs, children, bicycles etc.  a town is great for this (I took my lunatic Bedlington pup to the local open air markets to get used to lots of people/dogs/children etc.)  If pup looks tired at this age it is still possible to carry her for a while :D  By the time pup is a year old you won't be able to tire her out :D :D

Hi Dill and Hedi

Thanks for your replys....I have been taking Mitzi out for about 20mins to about half an hour a day...and by the time she gets home she has her nap and then shes back full of energy and ready for play....she does make me laugh she has so much energy and I think Im the one which is more worn out then her ha ha.

Thanks again for your advice.

Suzie
