Topic Dog Boards / Showing / showing a basenji
- By munsters4ever [gb] Date 19.01.05 00:28 UTC
Hi , a new owner with a gorgeous basenji appeared tonight at our ringcraft. None of us know much about the breed so we didnt quite know how they should stand and the main question was - Do you have to examine them on the table?  This may sound like a daft one but out of a room of 30 people and various breeds of dogs no one knew. Most of the club is filled with gundogs and working breeds with a few toys and terriers thrown in for good measure but very few hounds come , just a ridge back and an afghan [they didnt know either] . As we were all stumped i told them I would put a post on here and someone [who probably thinks we are all daft] willl be able to tell us for next weeks class.
Thanks
Nicky

Yes they are table dogs and are stacked.  I have had the end of the lead of one on a few occasions.  It feels really odd having something that light and fast on the end of the led comnpared to the solid Elkies. :D

Excellent , thank you. I knew I could count on the right answer on champ dogs. Will tell the owner next week so we can start helping her properly. He is such a lovely dog with a wonderful temprement slighty aloof but a really good dog. First time I have ever had anything to do with the breed.
Thanks again.

They are a lovely breed, Nicky. We had a friend who had one, and did she yodel :D

If I wasn't into Munsters, and gundogs of any long-haired variety ;) , I would seriously look into having one.

I might consider one in the future for doing midi agility as they are a great size. They are very distinct.

I remember that in the summer of last year I got lost trying to find Edinburgh zoo (I wasn't driving, either!). We stopped to ask directions and the lady had a Basenji. She was very surprised that I knew what it was :) Apparently this was her 2nd one and no-one had been able to recognise the breed :D

Poeple love it when you recognise their more obscure breed don't they :)  I saw a woman the other day in the park with two Shibu Inus and she was absolutely delighted that I knew what there were.

Having, in the past, a black and white English Springer and a black and white Large Munsterlander at the same time I was regularly asked if the Springer was the puppy of the Munster. The Springer was 7 years older  I've also been asked if I mated my Springer with a Dalmatian to get such a lovely big dog with spots ;) I try to recognise most unusual breeds if I can. One lady was surprised that I knew what her Cane Corso's were :D All thanks to Champdog owners at the time. I wouldn't have known about them if it wasn't for them :)

Yeah its the same with the munster [Linda will know] if someone comes up to you and knows what one is then they must know someone who has one and if you ask you can probably tell them who bred it and they are really impressed. I was talking to a couple walking in a country park with a munster [we were camping at an agility show] and asked them where they got him , he came for Devon and I could tell them his parents names his breeder , they were gobsmacked - i then showed them the three I had in the caravan and it made more sense!!! Its great to spot the rarer breeds.
