Topic Dog Boards / Health / horners syndrome

hi all
our golden retriever is a golden oldie ...14 years old ...she has just been diagnosed with having horners syndrome ...it is more probable in goldies than any other breed ...though other dogs ,animals and humans can get it ...the symptoms are ...a droopy eye and one nostril that runs at a higher temperature than the other ...this causes the nostril to block because the heat dries up the fluid in the nose ...
our vet tells us it can be caused by trauma to the neck or chest area ...she hasn't sufferred anything that we know of ...so there is a chance that she may have a tumour either in the brain or chest cavity....
she is in no discomfort at all ..our vet says it is painless it only looks bad because the eye is droopy ...she has drops to help with this .

we have been told the only way to tell if she has a tumour is to get a mri scan ...but we have the added risk that she has to have a general anaesthetic ..and with her age and the fact that she has a heart murmur ..we are not too sure what to do ...the vet has said if it was her dog she would leave things as they are ...as even if they found something it would be highly unlikely that they could/would operate .
does anyone on here have any experience of this syndrome ...or know of someone who has
thankyou
regards
debbie

We had it with  a Kerry Blue once, after he'd had a rumpus with another - that was definitely caused by trauma to the neck.

I used a lot of homeopathy on him - it was before the days of MRI scans etc.   If you PM me, I can try to remember what I used - it did (or something did) help the dry-eye type symptoms, and he looked much more normal, but always used to trot round in circles as if he were lunging himself on a line!

Our Goldie Clover developed Horners syndrome at about that age for no apparent reason amongst other things. The vet wanted to do tests but we decided not to put her through this and she went on to live until she was 15 1/2. It sounds as if you have a really good vet I would listen to her.
