please can i get advise as to when is the best time to get a second gsd?. i was thinking of maybe getting a puppy in july of this year when my boy will be around 15 months old. he is a very freindly and affectionate boy, not at all boystrious although very much a mummys boy, (follows everywhere sits on my feet all the time etc). also would really like to get a female but been told best to get another male which do other gsd owners feel is the best mix?

If you want a female get a female...there is less likelyhood of there being any disagreements with 2 different sexes. The only problem is when the bitch is in season...you will need to either have her speyed(safest) or have facilities to keep them seperated for 4 weeks
As long as your male is well trained and socialised etc there shouldn't be any problem with a 15 month age gap although I would suggest a longer gap (2 yrs +) if you decide to get another male)

The only problem I ever had when we had multiple GSDs was between two females & we had two stud dogs in the five males we had & three females, The dogs were never any problem & they were not related to each other, even when the bitches were in season, I would never have two females, but another dog or bitch puppy should be ok but I would have at least a two year gap between a puppy & a young dog this allows for your current dog to be(hopefully fully mentally mature) & there would be no "pecking order"problem JMHO

Totally agree...can be done but not everyone is as experienced and since the OP 1st post says the 1st dog is a mummys boy who follows her everywhere and the OP is obviously not as knowledgeable as you(or wouldn't be asking the question....no offence meant guest) a problem between 2 males is possible.

I did say getting a puppy dog or bitch & if a bitch one would need to be kenneled whilst the bitch is inseason

Strangely enough with GSDs more people have two dogs than a dog & bitch & we often have people coming back for a dog to replace half of a pair of dogs than a dog & bitch, our rescue lady rarely lets a bitch go to a home were there is already a bitch as GSD bitches often fall out forever, but she will depending on the temps of the dogs let a dog go to where there is another dog

At the club I go to there are a good few GSDs & most of the males are in a household with another male

You may have a different experience of having two male GSDs together but we even had a call today for a male GSD to be companion to another as they had just lost their older male GSD & the people had only ever had males & it was a pet home.
