my dog have sensitve skin so whaen i use a harness it makes her skin raw and red i dont like chain chokers cuz they make her gag i dont like regular collars cuz she can slip out of them so i love martingale collars cuz they only tighten a little bit enough to keep her in check and enough not to slip off and thats why these collars work best for me thanks for reading!

In the UK we normally call these half check, or half slip collars :D they are my collar of choice too especially with a breed with a thick neck ruff.

Thanks Brainless I was thinking martingale as in horse type thingy almost a harness.

Isnt a martingale the piece of tack which goes from the head to the chest to hold the horses head back? Used with the high stepping carrage horses? I seem to remember my father talking about using one on the pony and trap he used to go to market on when he first left school.

Almost - its not to hold the head back, its just to stop them raising their heads too high.

I knew it was something like that.
I know he was in the trap one day and the shalfs broke. The trap slid forwards into the hind legs of the pony and the pony bolted with my father in it, still secured to the pony by the straps, straight through a hedge into a field. His boss was not amused!
Maybe that's why I keep clear of horses!

I had a long chat and exchange of photos with US friends before we realised that is what they called a half check :D

Brainless, are the half-slip collars the same as the ones alot of greyhounds use. I was on a Greyhound charity Forum just now and they are selling "Martingale" collar that are made of material, no chain in the middle but a piece of looped webbing that links the two ends of the collar and must tighten the collar when the dog pulls. The reason I am asking is that I am going to buy Olive a new collar and was wondering if one of the "martingale" collars they are selling would be suitable. Olive has the habit of trying to backout of her collar if she is spooked, and because her head is narrower that her neck, getting a collar she can't escape from is difficult.

Yes you can get half checks which have webbing instead of chain. You can also get Greyhound/Whippet padded collars with the half check chain in from Accolade Leathercraft. http://www.accoladeleathercraft.com/
