Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / help - barking labrador

We need help! Our female lab age 2 is very friendly and plays happily with other dogs in the park. When on the lead, however, if she sees another dog (or a cat) she starts jumping around wildly, & barking. She has even bitten through her halti! She is not aggressive towards us whilst doing this, but is very intimidating for other people. She has always growled & barked and pulled when she sees cats, but has only fairly recently started barking like this at other dogs. And the problem is getting worse. We would welcome any suggestions as to what we can do. She always has 2 walks a day. Normally one in the park (off lead) and one road walk (part on, part off lead). There is someone at home with her most of the time - although she does sleep a lot when in the house. Please help.

I'd work on getting her attention and rewarding her with a tasty treat when she looks at you.  This behaviour can be trained as a 'watch me' command and used whenever you get into possible situations when she might bark.  This will teach her that an approaching dog or whatever actually means if she looks to you instead of barking will get her a much more rewarding experience than just barking......

We have exactly the same problem with our gr, he is great off lead playing with other dogs but when on lead he will bark and pull if he sees another dog, i know how you feel some owners will take a wide birth.
