i WANTED TO OPEN UP A DISCUSSION OF GENDER IN LITTERES THERE ARE LOTS OF OLD WIVES TAILS BUT THERE MAY BE SOME REALLY USEFULL HELPS. I HAVE OVER THE PASSED THREE LITTERS HAD BOY OUT NUMBER GIRLS 3-1 ARE THERE ANY NOW GENDER INFLUENCEING TECHNIQUES' OR POTIONS THAT HAVE BEEN TRIED AND TEST BY YOU i WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT THEM. APART FROM ALWAYS WANTING HAPPY HEALTHY PUPS IT WOULD BE NICE TO PRODUCE A HIGHER FEMALE RATIO IN MY PUPS WHAT ARE YOUR VEIWS

Litters number 1 and 2 were both evenly split boys & girls. My current litter was 6 boys! Supposedly the earlier you mate in the season nearer to the optimum time of ovulation the more girls you get. So you will need to predict her optimum time and mate accordingly.

Hi Clan.
Welcome to the forum. Just to let you know... on message boards & emails, writing with "Caps lock" throughout your sentences is considered as if you are yelling or shouting. It's also very difficult for some to read.... including myself.
I'm not involved in breeding, so I have no clue about the myths... other than in human reproduction ;) I'm sure that someone else here will have an opinion or idea of such :D
toodles

I too would be interested in any old wives tales or tips which may work I seem to have the opposite problem, I have wanted a dog pup for the show ring for the last three litters with no luck last time I got 7 bitches and one solid coloured dog (no Boxer white markings) perhaps I do commit the sin of mating early rather than later as I am always eager not to miss ovulation, any ideas would be worth consideration.

I have been doing alot of reading of late and have to fantastic breeding books at home most of them touch on the male/female thing.
from what I have ready and any scientific evidence that I have read seems to point to the male sperm being shorter lived that the female
and therefore if mating are spread appart or timed with an ovulator(not lucky enough to own) there may be away of influcencing the sex of pups but no evidence to show at the moment.. There was much discussion amongst exhibitors about the use of Vitimin E the comment being branded about bigger litters and more females but I dont knowif anone has any evidence that it works and I am concerned about dog health and vitimin E are there any contra-indications to worry about.

I tend to mate early and have in 3 litters consisting of 16 puppies produced only 4 males.
To start with I put it down to that particular bitch maybe having a uterine lining that was a tad hostile to male sperm.
Then I started using my male at Stud with his breeder - her first litter was twice the size of her previous litters over the last 15 yrs with a 50 - 50 ratio. The next 2 litters were again larger than her norm with predomanetly bitch puppies all these matings when worked back were found to be early ie between day 5 - 9 of the cycle. I have used the ovulator detector to great effect I feel.
My next mating will be a daughter of the larger litter and female producing bitch and a Maiden stud - I am hoping for a smaller litter ie below 6 puppies but a higher number of bitches to dogs - oh and creams! I will be mating early but not as early as her mother in the hope of keeping the numbers down lol - will let you all know how it goes.

That's typical, always blaming the female for gender :D How about saying the stud just had weak male sperm that time ;)

If you want a litter of all Bitches, just make a list of puppy buyers who want dogs and I’ll guarantee there'll be no dogs at all in the litter!

John
I heard about the 'early mating for bitches' tale. Despite mating early I had six dogs and three bitches. I was very happy as I didn't deliberately mate early. Everyone said it would be easier to home bitches. But I had many more enquiries for dogs than bitches and no problems at all.
Lorna ;)

John, it was t'other way 'round, but been there, done that, got the T-shirt :-( Vet stopped on his way home because he knew she was whelping and then stayed for coffee and chat. He kept fielding them, holding them up and announcing "this one's a girl .... oops ... no ... its another boy ....!"

Must admit with my SWD's don't have a mating until late on (18 days). My last litter 5 dogs and 1 bitch. Carina was mated on her 13th day, so let's see what this produces as this is early for an SWD

Hi, I always have my bitches mated as early in the season as they will stand, but sadly the dog is not always available when I want it to be, or I cant change arrangements at the last minute to go off for the day, as I always have to travel a long way- there are no decent dogs within 120 miles. When I can mate them as early as I want to, we always have more bitches. The male sperm swim more quickly and die sooner than the female sperm which takes its time and arrives to fertilise eggs up to 18 hours later. If you mate before ovulation the male sperm have alreday arrived at an unripe egg and supposedly die off, waiting-aaah. If you can mate at least 24 hours before ovulation you are suppposed to get more females. I am expecting a litter at the moment and did have the bitch booked in for a Tuesday, but on the Sunday night she looked ready and I was lucky that I could use the dog the next morning. So I am hoping for a basketful of girls!! Now I have said all this she will probably have all boys, knowing my luck!! In the last 4 litters I have had 8 bitches and 4 boys, so I guess that is a ratio of 2:1.

I have just done a repeat mating from one I did 21 months ago. Then it was a predominantly dog litter (Bitch was mated on Day 13 both times) - 8 dogs, 6 bitches. This litter 5 dogs & 9 bitches. The only thing that's changed is the stud dog now has bicarbonate of soda added to his diet. Since this has happened he has thrown up pro-bitch litters.
Supposed to be something to do with alkalines and acids etc...

I have have bred and reared 41 puppies in 7 litters (45 born). There were 16 males, and 29 females, 4 were lost 3 males and 1 female, so reared 13 boys and 28 girls!
All my bitches were mated after the 14th day of theri seasons, 4 different bitches, 3 in direct femal descent, and one cousin!
I read somewhere when applied to people, that if the sperm reached the egg late in the fertile period there was more chnce of female offspring, and earlier, male, but again possibly an old wives tale!

One of my bitches has had 3 litters producing:
Litter 1 - day 18 mating = 3 dogs and 2 bitches.
Litter 2 - day 23 mating = 6 bitches.
Litter 3 - day 11 mating = 2 dogs and 3 bitches.
Her son from the first litter sires mostly bitch puppies and her daughter from the same litter has had 1 litter producing 3 dogs and 1 bitch.

Dilita my SWD had 3 litters, first litter 2 dogs and 2 bitches, one bitch born dead. Second litter 2 of each again unfortunately 1 male died at 7 days and the other at 4 weeks and her last litter was 2 bitches and 1 dog, unfortunately again lost 1 bitch at 7 weeks. Was mated at 13th day.
As you might have guessed never had much luck with my pups, but having lazy SWD's doesn't help, boy they don't want to part with them.
Carina has been scratching now for 2 days and digging holes in the back garden and has slept all day today, let's see how she does, shouldn't be long now.

donot forget to ring me asap when the pup are born, seeyou saturday.

Hi all, just a footnote to this thread, after saying I usually get more girls than boys, had one early mating and have 5 boys and a girl!!
