Hi does any body on here have any experience with the injection the vet can give a bitch that has accidently been mated??My bitch only had a litter of 10 healthy puppies in late september and i didnt even know she was in season, stupid i know but i certainly wasnt expecting her to be in again so soon and she was still quite swollen down below from the litter so i hadnt noticed anything different.Un fortunatley on wednesday she was in the run in the garden with my other bitch and my male and i looked out of the window and saw them tied i ran out side and shouted at him to get off, stupid again i know, but i was so shocked but of course it was too late as soon as he saw me he turned and they were tied.I rang my vet imediatly and have been advised that she could have an injection on friday and one again on sunday, they couldnt comment on the success rate or whether it can damage a bitch for future breeding.I have been desperately asking around for advice and have had differing views on the injection.I would really prefer to stop this pregnancy but at the same time i dont want to compromise her health(apparently a slight risk of pyometra??)or her future breeding. Please if any of you have had this done, what was the outcome?Any advice comments and info welcome, thank you very much in advance.

I haven't any experience of the injection, but I would go for it. Her present health is more important than her future breeding possiblities. I'd get that dog castrated too !!!

Hi

I do know of someone who used this injection on a bitch only a few months ago, and she had no problems, maybe a slightly extended season but that was it.  and she seems fine. Although she was warned that they can cause problems.  But at the end of the day, this bitch coped fine with them, I would have said it would be safer to have the injection than to risk a litter from your bitch at this time.

I knew someone who used this injection on her bitch very late on to abort a litter, obviously it wasnt very nice for the bitch or the people that owned her, so if you are going to get it done do it as soon as you can.  Also these people mentioned it delayed their bitches season for months after she was due to come into season again.

As far as I know there are two type of injection, one is like the morning after pill and your window of opportunity is only just a few days after the mating. The other, from what I understand, can be given up to day 40ish after the mating and this will abort the pups. Get down to your VET as soon as you can and I am sure they will sort it out.

My bitch had the injection when the same thing happened. She was given one injection then 2 days later another one. It can cause a phantom pregnancy which she had but with no problems. In her next season she was mated and had 5 healthy pups so the injection will not harm her if you do what to mate her later on

I have used this injection but you MUST leave at least 36 hours from mating to injection.  Or it won't work!
