I have had my 2 1/2 year old beagle at the vets as she has suddenly started weeing such alot and such a large quantity. As i went into the vets she wet on the floor so the vet managed to get a sample. He then tested it and said it was at the very top of the scale of alkaline. She has no infection and he tested her for diabetes and that was clear.
He has advised me to go on a very low protein diet (i currently feed Burns) of pasta and chicken for 2 weeks and then i have to take her back.
Has anyone else experienced this ? What has caused it and why so suddenly ? I'm really concerned about her, shes fine in herself but i'm just hoping there isn't an underlying problem.

If the vet took the sample off the floor, what had the floor been cleaned with??? Many cleaning products and bleaches are extremely alkaline as is normal soap solution ;) perhaps he should do a water sample off the floor and check that (after checking the ph of the water too as in some areas it can be very alkaline (hard water) straight from the tap) as a control. Unless he does this you won't know whether the reading he got is true as residues on the floor could be affecting the test :) :)
Hope this helps

Hi Dill,
Thanks for your reply. I've had Daisy at the vets today as she has got worse over the past couple of days. Shes now going to the toilet every 20 minutes and shes drinking lots of water. I took a urine sample with me and the vet tested it again. It is still high alkaline but the urine also has protein in it. He thinks she may have a bit of kidney damage, probably due to an infection as she has just recently finished her season. I've got to avoid protein in her food until the kidneys repair themselves.

Could it be cystitis. My girlie gets it a lot. Sounds similar
Good Luck

Hi Beagle,
Just a thought really. Does your girl drink water from the toilet?? If you use bleach in there or have one of those blocks containing bleach it could be worth looking into ;) I knew a cat breeder who had a similar problem with one of her cats and it turned out that the cat was drinking the water from the toilet, like dogs some of them will consume the most unlikely things

Hi Becky sorry to hear that Daisy had to be spayed due to a cyst on her uterus hope she recovers quickly. Best Wishes
