i have mated my bitch and would like to know when the best time for me to take her to the vet to be sure if she has took.some say between4/5 weeksis the best time .the breeder i mated my dog said not to get her scanned as this can make the dog absorb the pups is this true

Sorry - but this sounds to be absolute rubbish!!!  Why otherwise would farmers choose to have ewes scanned to see if they are carrying twins/triplets if there is a chance that the foetus could be re-absorbed?

For what its worth, I had Loki scanned when she was between 5 & 6 weeks - scan showed 5+ pups - she had 7.

If this is an example of your breeder's advice to you, I would strongly suggest that you get a copy of the Book of the Bitch PDQ!!!

Regards

Margot

thanx for your reply i was just saying what the breeder had told me
why does a bitch re-absorbed her pupsin fact how can she be having pups then no as i have never heard of this before

Scans have shown that absorption of pups does indeed take place, as was suspected by many breeders before scans became available. But the scanning doesn't cause it. Absorption happens when whelps die in the uterus so that their presence doesn't affect the others.

Back in the summer we had our girl scanned at 5 weeks pregnant, there were definitely 7+ pups alive and well, sadly the litter died at 7 weeks and she started aborting them just after, but only delivered 5..........so it goes to show that pups do get absorbed and pretty quickly too.
