HI
I just thought I would give you an update on Saffy.
We took her back to the royal vets collage for her check up xrays yesterday! (For those that dont know she was hit by a car, had both front legs broken, had a 9 hour op to put in pins and plates.)
Her right leg is healing well but unfortunately her left leg isn't doing so well, she has an infection around the broken area, so is now on anti-biotics for 4-6 weeks and we have to take her up there again in 4 weeks. The vets are hope full the anti-biotics will get rid of the infection and then the broken bones will start to heal, at the moment its the plates that are holding the bone together. Other than this set back they were pleased with her progress so I surpose thats somthing!

I am quite gutted and just hoping and praying her leg will get better!
She is now still on limited exercise, only lead walks in the garden to go to toilet and to be kept in her crate until they see her again, that means she will have been confined to her crate for over 10 weeks when we go back to see them! She has been very good and seems to accept it ok and only really grumbles if she needs to go out side! she gets very exciteted when she does go in the garden and would run around if she wasn't on her lead, she walks well without a limp at the moment anyway.
I will post again when we know more or if we see any improvemnet in her infection.

Glad to hear she's doing well, I hope that the antibiotics will clear up the infection. A lady I work with has a poodle that broke both his front legs and has since made a full recovery (he had plates in both his legs too) - The only way you can tell anything happened is from the scar where they operated on him.

Good Luck :)

Thanks for that bit of reasurance Ice!
Its good to hear of other dogs that have been though the same and are now fully well again! it gives me some hope! Is the dog able to live a normal life as in run around junp around long walks etc? or do they have to be careful all the time with what the dog does?

I think the prognosis for the future depends on the site of the break.  If it involves a joint then there is the pre disposition to arthritis, but if it's in the main body of the bone, then there shouldn't be any more problems.

Glad to hear recovery is going well :)

The owners do err on the side of caution now, but he does live a fully normal life :)

As Digger said, it does depend on where the break occurs (in the poodle's case it was in his upper and lower forelimbs).

Keep us updated :)
