Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / WHEN 2 MATING DOGS TURN AND LOCK!!! (locked)
- By Joanne [gb] Date 12.01.05 22:12 UTC
IVE MATED MY BITCH THIS WEEK DURING HER OVULATION PART OF HER CYCLE, TODAY HER LAST DAY THE DOG AND HER TURNED BACK TO BACK AND THIS LASTED APPROX 15 MINUTES.
IT WASNT A NICE SIGHT BUT THEY WERE OK WE REASSURED THE DOGS THEY WOULD BE FINE WHILST I WAS REALLY WORRYING TO DEATH THEY WOULD HURT EACH OTHER. EVENTUALLY THEY RELEASES THEMSELVES, PHEW!!  ANYONE HAD SIMILAR EXPERIENCES?

This is what's meant to happen! It's called the 'tie' and is an important part of the mating process. Dogs do it, wolves do it, dingoes do it, foxes do it ... it's normal!

I don't mean to sound rude, but how much knowledge do you have about breeding dogs, because it doesn't sound as though you've done much research. Please reassure me that both dog and bitch have been hip-scored and eye-tested before you mated them, and that you have researched their pedigrees for possible hereditary problems.

Dont worry I was only expressing my days events!  This is the first time I have bred my dog and yes for hours I have been reading up on breeding but there are so many diferrent tales people tell me about when they actually mate that I just thought I'd ask.
I have had them hip-scored and there eyes tests.
Dont worry!

Well we all have to learn :) but there is always a danger that the dogs can hurt themselves or each other if not guided properly and the worrying bit is your stud dog owner appears to be just as novice. When starting out it would have been a much better proposition to have chosen a mentor as well as a dog.

dont worry this is very normal

Good job the dogs knew what they were doing

Joanne this is the tie. When a dog mounts the bitch he thrusts, the bitch then clamps onto the dog and the dog, usually with help from the two breeders, turns and ties. The bitch will hold until she is ready to release, this can last anywhere from a few minutes up to an hour. This is normal.  I would have thought that with planning to mate your bitch, either you or the stud owner would have known this. Please get as much advice as you can if she is in whelp and buy ..The Book of the Bitch..   Someone will be on here later to give you more advice

Have just read this again, why another LABRADOR. I have just had a very bad day with someone else thinking that this is OK.

<I have had them hip-scored and there eyes tests.>

So lucky to own a stud dog whose breeding was a good match for your bitch & you have never bred dogs before
- By Anwen [gb] Date 12.01.05 23:32 UTC
Um ... am I missing something? Where does Joanne say she owns the sire?
- By Fillis Date 12.01.05 23:48 UTC
I think that the fact she says "I have had them hip...." suggests she owns both dog and bitch.
- By Fillis Date 12.01.05 23:52 UTC
It also concerns me that the poster has been reading about breeding for "hours"!

The post just worries me full stop.

"for hours I have been reading up on breeding "

Do you think I overdid it then?  It took me six years of reading and researching before I took the plunge  and I had bred cats for years so had plenty of 'technical and practical knowledge' ;) :)

I too must have done it all wrong Got my first GSD in 1958 bred my first litter in June 1971 I obviously took far too long too !
