Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / when is bitch ready
- By kizzistaff [gb] Date 09.01.05 23:46 UTC
A friend of mine is trying to mate her staff. She used the same stud last time and they tied and the bitch had 4 pups and no probs.
She cant remember which day she took the bitch to the stud last time but thinks it was about day 12 although they didnt tie until the third mating because the dog although was mounting ok was not able to get his p*nis in and was thrusting with it at the side next to the bitchs leg. This time the bitch is on day 14 and still slightly bleeding but slowed down a lot. She stands for the stud but when he mounts he is still having probs hitting the spot and bitch starts to get fed up. If you try to help him in he dismounts. He is slightly larger than the bitch so maybe thats why he doesnt hit the spot and he is quite heavy so she tends to sink down a bit when he mounts. Do you think that maybe the bitch is not quite ready and that is why she doesnt stand properly, although I would have thought that by day 14 she would be maybe over the optimum time or do you think it is the fault of the stud and the size difference between the 2 dogs. Any advice would be appreciated.

My girl that has pups was mated on day 15 & 17, my other girl back in the summer was mated on day 20 & 22, so there is a chance she's still not quite ready.  You could get her premate tested just to see if the optimum time is approaching.

Good luck

Bitch was mated again today but although she was standing really well for the stud, much better than yesterday he could not manage. He was mounting her but his p*nis was not coming out and in the end after several attempts he seemed to just give up. When he was trying to mate her yesterday and not hitting the spot he did get in once but came out before he was finished and his p*nis was quite swollen and he had to wait a bit before he could retract it back into the shieve (sp). Would this maybe have affected his performance today and it is worth them trying again tomorrow or leave it 48 hours to rest the stud.

Sounds like its a bit hit and miss as mating can be. But you could miss it if you dont try again and pretty quick but when you say heavy if he is a porker its hard work for him might be he's just not got the energy to keep trying. And a stud dog should not be fat bulky you can expect with this breed but overweight is a crying shame. If he is thrusting at her hind leg he hasnt got high enough on top of her he needs to be able to get right over her his head above hers so you need to have him raised a couple of inches then hopefully you will be able to guide him in. or try a different stud dog as I believe sometimes its a chemistry thing

He is not porky just a bit taller than her. We have tried to guide him him but he dismounts. You are right about the positioning though he is maybe not far enough forward. Last night he was interested and she was standing really well for him but as soon as he mounted it was as if he could not get his penis out of its sheave and he would dismount then he lost interest although she was still lifting her tail and standing for him. They are going to try again today. She has now more or less stopped bleeding and its gone a straw colour but shes still lifting her tail if you touch around there. Do you think its too late now?

Without a blood test to pinpoint ovulation you only have physical signs to go on.  In my view if she is still standing she may still be fertile and you should try again morning and night, but not for too long, say no more than an hour each time and then seperate them again.

They tried again with the same stud  bitch really standing with bum in the air but dog not really interested. Tried again this evening with a different dog and went really well with a good tie. They have arranged to use him again on thursday but are not sure if bitch will still stand as she will be on day 17 or 18. Do you think its worth doing it again.

I would try her again, but the owners should get both dogs and the bitch DBA analysed and when the pups are born have their parentage checked, as it is quite possible for the bitch to have conceived to the slip mating with the first dog, and of cirse tp this oen too and have a mixed sired litter.

Yep thought that might be the case his libido not quite up there some dogs perform better than others. I wouldnt bother going again I never go for a 2nd mating and would only if I thought the bitch wasnt up for it the first time or the dog didnt tie and thrusted his sperm on her leg. The tie is only the liquid that sends the sperm to where it has to go the thrusting is the sperm. She has already gone off so you have just caught her at the backend she probably wont be that interested by Thursday and most important the sperm lives from 4 to 7 days so no need for a 2nd mating.
Agree you should get the pups blood tested if your first dog happened to thrust inside her if he didnt and just got her leg then I would say it was ok. Cant see the point of disagreeing if you are certain he didnt enter her but if he did you will be able to tell which dog sired which pup's as they will be different and how that works with the KC.... god knows.
The joy's of mating when you dont want one it happens in the space of seconds and when you want one you have to sweat your bits off to get one who ever said breeding was easy.

You can register pups to different sires with dna tests no problem.

Thanks for all the replies. I will tell my friend she may need to get pups tested if bitch is pregnant as the dog did enter once although only for a few seconds so maybe he did inseminate her as when he came out he was obviously uncomfortable and had to wait for a bit for his penis to go down. I think she will try again Thursday anyway as it has been arranged with the stud owner. I dont suppose it will do any harm as if the bitch is finished she wont stand anyway.
