Topic Dog Boards / General / Frontline reaction

Perhaps should have put this under health but here goes.

After using Frontline previously and having no problems, I have found that on applying this time my lad has had a reaction - the two areas where the liquid has been applied have been irritated and weeped, but all is well now and they have heal up, well all but being a little dry in one of the areas/slight scud - thing is - I don't want to use Frontline again put me off - when should I try something else, and what else could I try?

Looking forward to your thoughts/replies.

Me!

Someone told me that if you put Garlic in your dogs food it helps to repel fleas etc??? BUT.... I have to say I do think the good old fashioned flee collars are good, smell a bit at first but no chemicals, did once find a Eucayptus & Menthol flea collar lasted 5 months, smelt lovely and did work!! not a flee/ tick for months!.Havent found once since....

WHY ?? do we have to use all these chemicals though? have just put some DR Martins on my lad, as he had a tick on him recently and it seems to have worked, maybe if you dont want to try a flee collar (and have your dog smell like a Boots pharmacy,) that may be ok for him...

Cheers Hairydog

I used to use those Herbal Flea Collars on my old girl but thought I'd try this Frontline having heard so much about it (wish I hadn't).  My mister loves garlic and so I do tend to give some at least once a week.

Do you think if I were to put on a collar whilst the sore is not completely heal it might irritate and flare up again? Can but try I suppose he's a hard nut, so possibly would do no harm, what do you think?

Thanks for your reply.  Have got a herbal collar at home brought a while ago, before going for the Frontline - I like the smell.  Perhaps if I find the collar not working I'll give Dr Martins a go.  I also use the household spray and do his bedding once a week (he's a bit of a smelly boy!!!) ;)

I have used the frontline SPRAY for years with no problem.  I did have a slight reaction on 0one of the girls when using the spot on Verison with the Pet Passport rules coming back to UK.  I would suggest you give the Spray a go.  As you use more of it allover it is actually more dilute than the drops so less likely to produce a reaction than the more neat drops.

OOhh I personally would wait until the scar etc has healed up,I dont have a problem with fleas but my man has had 2 ticks this year, first one was dead, and that was with Dr Martins on him, the other was Alive!! all it legs wriggling etc, got it off him in tact and after that put some more Dr Martins on him. You have to put that on every month, but its not expensive.

I tend to wash my mans bedding at least2/3 times a week he does protest though, so have to throw in the vet bed when he isnt looking.!

Thanks for the info and help/tips.  Cheers will wait for the area to clear up completely.  I found a tick on my mister, Ohhhh yuk I wriggled as much as the tick.  Will try the Dr Martins for the ticks and herbal collar and stuff see how it goes.

Thanks again to you both for your ideas and thoughts.

:)

The first time I used Frontline on Anton he had a reaction to it and lost some fur, tried it again 6 months later and he was fine and used it ever since.  I would also leave it a while before using any more treatments.
