Any tips on building up a skinny staffie...???
He is very lean and tall and although he is only 8mths he looks very very Lean
We feed him burns with Chicken Mackrel and Eggs mix and matching as he won't eat the burns on its own....
I have been told that I may have been over exercising him ut oh!! so I'll be cutting down on the walkies! x

The best way is proper nutrition and time.....theres no point in rushing things.Over doing things can cause health problems ....
I have a 10 month old elkhound. He is a showdog and does reasonably well...BUT is very immature.....its natural and in my opinion the way it SHOULD be!!!! I hate seeing a puppy look like an adult...they end up overdone!

I may be wrong (not sure with staffs) but most pup's go through a stage of looking all leggy and skinny. Give him some time and he will fill out naturally..
Andy
Some staffs are lean and will never be bulky. If he is of the longer legged variety they tend to be well muscled but not bulky and fatter looking like the smaller stockier ones.
Agree with the said posts you cant rush nature. Frustrating if you want to show your dog as the a lot of judges tend to put up a finished looking specimen rather than a baby that still looks like a baby. But what would you rather have a dog you cant show after he has reached 15 months of age because he has gone over the top or a dog that you might have to wait for but can be shown through all the classes. If you feed him well its just a question of time for him to bloom and when he does he might not be a power house like some of the short bulkier type but he will be fit and healthy and will give you years of pleasure. I had to wait for my dog to bloom and now I have to watch his weight but he has never ailed a day in his life. He has never been lame he can run around in the sun without keeling over and I have seen that enough times at the champ shows that are held outside and at four years of age he is getting the stud duties. So you enjoy every minute of your boy
my younger one is 6 months old and like whippet :D
as the others say, he will eithe be of the 'leaner' type, or he will fill out in time.

Try looking up information on satin balls, these things will certanley put weight on in the short term but as for long term feeding I would only offer them as a treat as your dog will become very fat very quickly fed on these things!.

I would like to add that a young dog that carrys too much weight is putting stress on growing bones and joints...much better to have them on the lean side
Archer
My youngest is almost 8 months and is also very slim (for his breed). I'm not too worried about putting weight on him though - I'd rather let him grow up in his own time. How much exercise does your boy get if you think you're over exercising him? My boy gets about 45 - 50 mins per day split into two walks (one in the morning and one in the evening). I found the 5 mins rule that has been posted here before to be a good indication of how much exercise to give.
My boy gets about 40 mins in the morning and 20 in the evning which I have been told is too much....He walks about a mile in 20 minutes so I wouldnt have thought 3 mile per day is too much or a could be wrong...its literally round the block ....???
Im not trying to turn him into a lard bucket or a bruiser I jsut want to make sure he is being fed and exercised adequatley...
Thank you

In your other post you said 1 hour in am and 20 mins in the pm which at 1 mile in 20 mins would make 4 miles!!!....yes 3 miles is too far IMO.By doing too much you will damage his bones/joints
'Road' walking is harder on a pup than free exercise
Archer
The time tends to change depending on how I feel when I get up in the morning.
For the 40-1hour in the morning he runs in the field in the evening is when we walk him on the road..
I will cut his exercise down and give me more things to do in the home.
Thanks

Staffys can be prone to over excercise when young as they look so hardy
difficult one this, our Staff girl is now 10 months old and at one stage went a little plump we thought. Now she seems to have stabilised her weight and appears to be showing her shape, she's the leggy type . We didnt change her diet at all during this time. We give her eggs in the morning still as she loves it, she has meat/fish 5 days a week with muesli mix added ( recommended by breeder and not tested on animals), also cheese once a week and fruit and veggies occasionally
She is walked about a mile most mornings and then runs in the field to her hearts content at the end of her walk but its more of a head down exploring type jog. Then she may go out in the evening just for a short walk. She has plenty of play at home with us with toys and balls though.
