Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / whining and barking when left alone

We have had our 15 week old german shorthaired pointer puppy for a week now and I need some help or advice on what to do with her whining and howling every time we leave her alone / go out of the room and most importantly leaving her alone at night.  I understand that she is bound to whine a bit as she is in new surroundings but having had little or no sleep for a week now I am slowly going round the bend as I thought it would only take her a few nights to settle into the new house. It is also frustrating as she seems to sleep for most of the day apart from when I am taking her for walks and playing with her and then she is up all night barking! I am worried she is developing an anxiety problem as not only does she whine and bark but pees when we leave her. Can anyone help?

Have you ever relented and gone into her at night when she has been barking and crying? If the answer is yes, then she *knows* that if she keeps it up, you *will* come ;) You have to be very firm and decide that, if you want her to sleep alone, you will NOT go into her at all.

Keep her awake more during the day, play with her, take her for a few short walks, do some basic obedience. If you fill her brain with the stuff during the day, she is more likely to sleep at night.

Make sure you leave her on her own for just a few minutes at a time during the day, don't make a fuss of her when you go back in to her, just carry on as usual . Don't make a fuss when you leave her either, just go out of the room for a couple of minutes. She will, hopefully, soon learn that nothing bad happens to her whilst you are away

Good luck :)
