Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Stud Won't mount, Help!!!
- By anivad21 [us] Date 09.01.05 20:35 UTC
Our male yorkie won't mount the bitch.  He sniffs and licks, but no mounting.  He seems kinda of afriad of her, becuse when the bitch puts her butt in is face he backs off real quick.  We took him to the bitches house, and left him there for a hour and I think he got scard.  I have a feeling he is over that, because we took him home and gave him a lot of love.  Now she is over at our place.  Still no mounting.  There was no test but the bleeding is minumial.  I really could use some help.  He is 15 months.

Maybe the bitch isn't quite ready, have you had her premate tested just to see if she is anywhere near?

What day is the bitch on now?  Bleeding isn't always an indication........my girl bled heavily right up to day 26, was mated on day 20 and got pregnant, I know of bitches that don't bleed at all.

Has your boy ever been used for stud before?

I thought about the test too. We might have to go get it tomorrow, but the bitch is not mine. We are doing this for pick of the litter.   He did lick her urine just a few minutes ago and started to gag.  The both got check before we started this.  My husband says he is not intrested.  I am hoping that it is just the bitch is not ready.  What I wanted to know if she was ready then how can you help the male mount.  He did drool yesterday and got excited a bit.  I am no good at this but both of us are just looking for a puppy for a companion for our current dog.

I hope you realise that if he does mount your bitch, then unless you are very experienced it may result in injury to either him or the bitch.

If you cannot get hold of someone who knows what they are doing to help, then I would suggest you forget the idea altogether.

All you are doing is producing yet another litter of puppies for the pet market, what happens if the bitch needs a caesarian and she dies and you are left with a litter of puppies to handrear. Thats a 24 hour a day job for at least three weeks if not longer.

What do you know about helping a bitch when she is whelping, have you really thought about this.  You could end up with huge bills.  Wouldn't it be a more sensible idea to just go out and buy a companion for your dog???

One of the things that a lot of people forget is not all dogs can or will become stud dogs. They are very much domesticated now. I think it is very common in some terriers not to have the instinct.

Has the bitch been mated before? It is generally known that it is best for either of the dogs to be experienced.

I'm not sure from your post that either of you have thought this through.  Is the owner of the bitch prepared for the Vet's bill as she doesn't know how to help her bitch when she whelps?  Your dog shouldn't be left with the bitch! The mating should be supervised by an experienced person with 2 maiden dogs.  He may well have been scared if she told him that she wasn't ready, or she didn't want to be mated!
Are you prepared for the possible change in your dog's temperament after he has mated a bitch?  Some dogs terratory mark (pee around the house) to show any ladies that he's a man!!
I think that I'd count my blessings that they haven't mated and the best option by far would be to go and buy yourselves a well bred companion.

Tell me about the marking Val.

We have had bitch's coming into season one after the other for the past 6 weeks.

I think I have used all the disinfectant in Norfolk, cleaning up after them!!!!

Val is right Anivad, your boys temperament will probably change for the worse, he will drive you mad if he even gets whiff of a bitch in season two streets away.  He will cock his leg up curtains, furniture, cushions etc. etc.  He may resort to bonking anything that moves, once he has the taste for it.

The Bitch is not mine, and has mated 2 times before.  The owners of the bitch breed other dogs. As for whelping we are not the owners of the bitch, so for the medical bills and headachs are not ours.  That would scare me and I would definalty research way proir to every starting such a task.  Besides most of the time if you don't have a dog that really mets the standard the cost of vet bills out ways the selling of the litter.   We have them both at our house because of the stress factor, but I think that might be to late for that.  Like I said I am really not into this whole thing.  The owners of the bitch are good friends that is why we are trying.  Also the two dogs really met the standard.  I would never let them mate if they didn't.  I have taken my male to a handler and we are traing for shows currently.  It would bother me if his personality changes.  I really like him the way he is.  My husband really wants another dog for ours.  I wouldn't be too sad if this did not happen, but I want to see if we could help.

If the owners of the bitch have bred this bitch before plus other dogs, then I would suggest that they come over to your house and do the mating, they after all are going to be the ones earning the money from the litter. and if they are experienced enough to have bred litters previously they should have some knowledge of matings instead of leaving to you and your husband.

By the way I hope you are not just letting the dog and bitch just run loose together, as this will tire your lad out and then he won't be able to mate her anyway.
- By anivad21 [us] Date 09.01.05 23:08 UTC
No they are not running loose.  We did try to get the Bitches owner to assist, but they only keep the females, so they didn't know much about the mating process.  They called being "tie" getting "stuck."  So as you can tell they don't get the whole thing.  My mom bread Schnauzers, but she never had a problem with any of them mounting.  I really feel stupid that we thought that you brought them together for about hour and they would breed.  I do understand everyone's opinion about us not going through.

So pleased you are listening to our advice.

Is the bitch shown at all, as if she isn't and you want to dabble in the showring, I still think you would be better forgetting this mating and buying in from a breeder with a good showing record. Your friends, if they are no more knowledgeable than to call a tie getting stuck and have bred litters previously without having witnessed and been involved in matings, are not likely in my opinion to breed the kind of quality you need to show.

If you buy from a good breeder, they are very likely to be prepared to mentor you in your entry into the world of showing.

there is nothing more disappointing than spending time and money showing a dog that is not good enough.

Thank you all for the information that you gave me.  We are going to stop this nonsense and take her home.  If we ever do decide to do this again I will defiantly research the subject and do it right.  And wait until we are done showing him, so we don't have personality conflicts.

You are very welcome, glad I could help.

It makes such a nice change for our advice to be taken onboard, enjoy showing your boy.

Wish you every success.

I think that sound like the right thing.  Get your lad in the ring.  You'll make some contacts and be able to buy in a promising puppy, or maybe even an older pup if a successful breeder is running on 2 from a litter.
If you want to show, it's very easy to get too many in the "cuddle box" who aren't good enough to show.  Your friend doesn't sound too knowledgable leaving you and your husband trying to use a maiden dog at stud!!
Do let us know how you get on in the ring!!  Keep brushing. :)

for a little humour on the subject, when i mated my labbie the dog wasnt sure what to do (maiden), she was standing for him and shoving it in his face but still wasnt sure i was about to give up and she must have read my mind she demostrated what to do with him when she got off of him it must of all clicked as he sorted him self out and the result was my 'lovely' chocolate monster :D
