For humans you add a tablespoon of sugar and a teaspoon of salt to a pint of water.

You can buy canine recovery salts, they are excellent.  http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk

JG,

Its 1tsp salt and 8 tsps sugar to a LITRE of water and Half tsp salt and 4tsps (1tablespoon) sugar to a pint.    Easy mistake to make but too much salt will only add to the dehydration ;)

I'll tell the local nurse that!

Hi Guest

Much would depend on what the problem was with whatever you are trying to rehydrate and why.  If it is for a dog you can get special rehydration mixtures from your vet but if your dog is dehydrated enough they a vet should probably be your first port of call to find out why?

Sorry JG, but maybe you should :(  I've had a lot to do with this subject, my youngest has had most of his colon removed (more than 3/4) and is at particular risk of dehydration (especially as an infant) While in hospital with him I had to witness nurses getting things wrong and making really simple mistakes, ones they shouldn't have made  if I hadn't had my wits about me my little one wouldn't have survived and certainly would not be the child he is today.  In all I've spent 6 months in hospital with him, I lived there for 3 months non-stop and some of things the nurses did would scare the life out of you :(

It's quite true what you say, their lack of skills and misinformation can be very dangerous. Thanks for pointing out the error I was told between a pint and a litre - as you say, it could prove to be a matter of life and death.

Hope your boy is doing all right now.
:)

Thanks JG :) I have had to learn things I never wanted to :(   and have learned to question everything - basically I have to know at least as much, if not more than they do ;)

Wierd really I would have trained as a vet if we'd had the money, but never wanted to be a nurse/doctor - not that there's a huge difference between humans and animals
